Update: There has been a lot of talk about Chanel's No.5 Holiday Calendar. It started on Dec. 2, when TikToker Elise Harmon uploaded an unboxing video of the now sold-out Advent calendar. Harmon gave the brand a "10/10" for the packaging, but it was the contents inside — including many smaller items, such as stickers, a key chain, and a magnet, as well as beauty items like the full-size fragrance and bestselling No.5 hand cream — that upset her and many of the people in the comments in relation the item's overall value. Some argued that the $825 price tag was too steep.

"This controversy is a bit of a shame because it was not what Chanel intended," said Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion and president of Chanel SAS, according to WWD. "Chanel thought it would please some of its customers by offering this type of product. Evidently, we see that you have to be careful and therefore, in future, we will certainly be much more cautious."

The original video (and preceding unboxing clips breaking down each item) have since gone viral, garnering millions of views.

Original post:
Chanel has spent all of 2021 celebrating the 100-year anniversary of its iconic fragrance, Chanel No.5, from introspective film projects to a limited-edition collection. It's only fitting, then, that the brand closes out the year in a big way with a No.5-themed advent calendar that's full of some of the brand's best-selling products.

The fragrance bottle shape isn't the only thing that makes the Chanel No.5 Holiday Calendar ($825) special. Instead of the usual 25 boxes like most advent calendars have, this one contains 27; and instead of those boxes being numbered 1 to 25, they're numbered 5 to 31 in an homage to the brand — 5, because, well . . . Chanel No.5, and 31, which invokes the street number of Coco Chanel's art-filled apartment and salon at 31 rue Cambon in Paris.

In addition to a 35ml bottle of Chanel No.5, the advent calendar also contains two full-size lipsticks (both red, one matte and one satin), one nail polish (also red, in a new shade created just for the occasion), a bottle of the brand's best-selling No.5 hand cream (shaped like a very chic egg), a No.5-scented bar soap, a Chanel snow globe, and a handful of other No.-5 themed accessories.

Unsurprisingly, an advent calendar like this comes with an over-the-top price tag. At $825, the Chanel No.5 Calendar sits at the luxurious end of the gifting spectrum. Launching on Oct. 15, there are only limited quantities of the advent calendar available, and those with deep pockets or a deep love of Chanel are sure to pick up this exclusive gift quick.
