If you spend a lot of time watching Nancy Meyers movies, love coastal vibes, and wish you could shop directly from Diane Keaton's closet, you might be a "coastal grandmother." The term, first coined by TikTok user Lex Nicoleta, refers to lovers of neutral color palettes, the beach, and breezy linen clothing (among other things). Basically, if the outfit looks like it would score you an invite to Martha Stewart's house, you're on the right track.
The coastal-grandmother aesthetic has been taking over TikTok recently, and I've seen tons of creators showcasing carefully curated outfits that perfectly represent the look. One thing I hadn't seen a lot of is coastal-grandmother beauty looks, so when I stumbled across a video by TikToker Olivia DeMuro, where she created the perfect coastal-grandmother hairstyle, I knew I wanted to test it out. The video has over 2.2 million views and counting, and commenters on the video said it fits the aesthetic perfectly, so I hoped it would be a winner.
I wouldn't consider myself a "serious" coastal grandmother, but I've definitely dabbled in the vibe, especially while on vacation. I've also been looking for different hairstyles to switch up my typical looks, which generally consist of just wearing my hair in a claw clip or wearing it down. DeMuro's look seemed easy enough to achieve, so I set to testing it out immediately after seeing the video.
To try out this hairstyle, I needed a few things before getting started. I grabbed my curling iron, hairspray, a comb, and two small clips. I started out by curling all of my hair, twisting it in an outward motion away from the face, and focusing on the ends. From there, I parted it down the middle. Next, I took a small section of hair on the left side from the back of my ear to the crown of my head (similar to what I would do if I was doing a half-up-half-down hairstyle on just one side) and twisted it in an inward motion toward my middle part. I twisted it that way roughly three times, then clipped it in place. I then repeated those steps on the right side of my hair. To finish everything off, I sprayed hairspray all over to help hold the style in place.
The final result was a super-cute chic hairstyle that would make Nancy Meyers proud. It kept my curtain bangs out of my face all day, which was a nice reprieve because they have definitely been getting on my nerves lately. Plus, it took me less than 10 minutes to accomplish the entire hairstyle, but it made me look much more put together than I normally might. I definitely plan on re-creating this look, especially on vacation.
If you've already nailed the coastal-grandmother look when it comes to your outfit, and you've been looking for the perfect hairstyle to finish everything off, definitely give this look a try. It didn't take long to achieve, but the results are stunning and 100 percent worth testing out at least once.
