These Are the Top 10 Makeup Trends For Fall According to Pros
Fall is just around the corner (Sept. 22, to be exact). While we'll certainly miss sunset streaks and breezy hairstyles (more Summer 2016 beauty bucket list items here), the new season comes with a plethora of exciting beauty trends for your experimenting pleasure. From soft, peach-washed eyelids to dark, berry-stained lips, makeup artists revealed to us the looks they're most looking forward to. Plus, they supplied the savvy tips you need for getting a head start.
Fresh, Subtle Skin Highlights
The trend: Fresh, Subtle Skin Highlights
The breakdown: "Healthy-looking, radiant skin is back! To me, skin always looks best when it's flawlessly natural-looking and not heavily covered and overly contoured, as we saw more of last Fall. Creamy, dewy-looking skin is a must." — Beau Nelson
Get the look: "Use a lightweight, dewy foundation to even out your skin tone, then apply a stick foundation or concealer around the nose and under the eye to help camouflage any extra discoloration and blend seamlessly with foundation (I use a rounded, fluffy eye shadow brush for easy blending). Finish your look with a dewy highlighter on the tops of cheekbones and the Cupid's bow of the lips."
The trend: Peach-Washed Lids
The breakdown: "I love this look, as seen at the Balmain, Narciso Rodriguez, and BCBG Fall runway shows, for several reasons. Everyone can wear it (if you have light or blue eyes, it's really going to pop), and it's so quick and easy to achieve. Pair it with a nude lip for day, or with a deep crimson shade to add some drama come evening." — Robert Sesnek
Get the look: "Start by applying cream color at the lash line and blend up until you reach your desired intensity. Then, top off with a light sweep of powdered shadow (I like using Tom Ford brushes #11 or #13)."
The trend: Glitter Eyeliner
The breakdown: "I think glitter is unexpected for Fall, as it's usually seen more during holiday. I loved the glitter at the Fendi and Tommy Hilfiger shows. I also like combining the black eyeliner and glitter trends — makes it edgy and fun." — Laura Stiassni
Get the look: "Apply black eyeliner pencil around the entire eye. Then, pat the desired amount of glitter using a small round brush — either a hint here and there or along the entire line (you can also use a cream for softer looks). Be daring and use a royal blue glitter pot or take a more subtle approach with neutral colors like copper, rose, and gold."
The trend: Berry-Stained Lip
The breakdown: "This is definitely one of the standout Autumn trends for me. It covers hues from deep, dark berries and purples to black. For those who want to dabble, a berry shade can be extremely flattering, as it works well on all lip shapes and comes off as extremely romantic. For the truly adventurous, opt for darker berry, blue, or even black shades. These were also big at the Rodarte NYFW show." — Emma Day
Get the look: "For a soft berry, apply a darker shade to the center of your lips, and then use a cotton bud or your fingers to draw the color out to the lip line (make sure lips are moisturized beforehand)."
Heavy Charcoal Eyes
The trend: Heavy Charcoal Eyes
The breakdown: "I love the freedom that this look affords. Forget checking the mirror and wondering if your eyeliner has smudged. Let it smudge! Make it thick and make it black, the messier the better." — Gina Robinson
Get the look: "You can start with a more controlled look and let the eyeliner move as it will. As a fan of a more dramatic look, I recommend rimming the entire waterline in a nice soft black kohl and lightly smudging the outer edges of the eyes with a brush to soften up the line. From there, let it go! For a touch more drama, you can use these soft liners on the eyelid and smudge them into a nice black smoky eye as seen on the models for Moschino."
The trend: Pinky-Nude Lips
The breakdown: "Subtle, just-kissed lips are making a major comeback, reminding us of the days when J Lo would rock pink shades to match her Juicy Couture jumpsuit — so good!" — Joey Maalouf
Get the look: "Opt for a high-impact color combined with the shine of a gloss (we're saying goodbye to matte lips, at least for now)."
The trend: Dramatic Eyelashes
The breakdown: "For Fall, lashes are more popular than ever and the most luxe way to dramatize any look. Dramatic lashes can be done alone or with light illuminated eye colors for a high-contrast look. With so many different faux lash options and mascaras, any lash look can be achieved — even a customizable look with individual lashes. Dior did spiky, dramatic lashes with tons of mascara and Roberto Cavalli did soft, fluttery faux bottom lashes for an updated 'Twiggy' look." — Jazmyn Combs, Blushington Makeup and Beauty Lounge lead artist
Get the look: "Apply faux lash sets spaced evenly across the eye, then top with an icy shadow or a buildable mascara applied in two to three coats, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next."
The trend: Classic Reds
The breakdown: "This delicate, vintage-like look is classic, timeless, and so chic when paired with fresh, clean skin. I love the simplicity and elegance of it and it is universally flattering." — Vanessa Scali
Get the look: "Apply lip pencil directly to the center of the lips, and press your lips together to heat the product and push the color into the skin. Then, using a lip brush, blend the color at the lip line. This will give you full coverage and the precision you need to keep the lip line clean."
The trend: Untamed Brows
The breakdown: "Say goodbye to the Instagram brow! I love that we're seeing this free, natural brow that has a little bit of a wild side to it. Plus, it's a look that's so much easier to achieve than the perfectly sculpted brow that takes an endless amount of time." — Joel Canales
Get the look: "Use a brow pencil to fill in any sparse areas (with the pencil suggested, you can also use the flat edge to help brows appear naturally fuller). Once brows are filled to their desired shape and shade, use either your fingers or a spoolie to brush hairs up and in the opposite direction of growth to give them a bit of that uncontrolled element."
Artsy Bright Makeup
The trend: Artsy Bright Makeup
The breakdown: "This is what I'd consider one of the most fun trends from the Fall 2016 runway, as seen at the Jeremy Scott show. It's also really easy. Throw a colorful liner in your bag for when you want to add a pop of color. If you're feeling really bold, you can use the same or another neon shade on your lips as well." — Melissa Rogers
Get the look: "Apply a primer to the eyelid, then draw liner in an upward motion (similar to what you'd do with a cat eye). Leave a little space between the liner and your lash line so it really pops."
