The celebrity: Keira Knightley, Golden Globes 2015
The hack: Fresh lipstick that looks worn
The pro tip: While a bold pout can turn heads, sometimes a more subtle, blended look will actually last all night and feel more modern. Kate Lee used a very specific, multistep lip technique on Keira to create this "bitten, stained berry lip" — as she described.
DIY it now: While you're prepping your skin for all the makeup, add a thick coat of balm, like Chanel Hydra Beauty Nourishing Lip Care ($50). Once you're ready to do your color, Lee said to remove the formula with a cotton tip, leaving a soft, supple surface for a smooth and even application. The exact shade used on Keira was Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Etienne (available March 2015). Lee painted the lips fully and proceeded to blot it off with a tissue. A key step in the process was to soften the lip line with a cotton tip to avoid that severe '90s look. She then smudged translucent powder around the edges to diffuse the color even more. To create that "just drank a glass of vino" look, Lee used a lip brush to apply more color to the center of the pout and feather it out.
Bonus: Add a dab of highlighter — or white eye shadow — to the top of your cupid's bow to make the curves of your pucker stand out more.
