Friedman calls certain dye jobs (including this one) "evolving colors." "They keep changing [as they fade]," she remarked, "so you don’t need to get colored so often." That said, you make your return to the salon, make sure your colorist has a game plan. "When touching up, I try to follow my guide — the faded color — and try to replicate it," said Friedman. Have your mane maestro do the same.
In between visits to your colorist's chair, try these tricks to keep your rainbow hair vibrant:
- Stock up on dry shampoo. The less frequently you have to wash your mane, the better, as cleansing will strip the dye from your strands.
- Use an apple cider vinegar rinse after a conditioning treatment. Friedman advised diluting a capful of ACV with about a quart of cool water. "The acid closes the cuticle and locks in the conditioner."
- Use cleansing cream instead of your regular shampoo. Friedman loves Keracolor Clenditioner ($20), which neutralizes chlorine and moisturizes strands, preventing oxidation (brassiness) and nourishing each strand.
