These Will Be the 14 Most Talked-About Beauty Trends in 2016

The contouring craze. The coconut oil takeover. The power of makeup trend. Between the variety in artistic makeup expression, new products, and stereotype-breaking models, 2015 brought a new and improved version of modern beauty.

Some say all good things have to come to an end. But we don't think this beauty upswing will phase out — even if last year did. We're expecting 2016 to be another important year for beauty, and though we can't predict exactly what we'll see . . . we do have some guesses.

Get ready for new celebrity product lines, off-the-runway trends, and stylish cuts — there's more to come, and it's all happening in 2016.

Men take on (and over) makeup

One of the great things about YouTube is that it provides a diverse space — thus, it is no surprise that many of the hottest male makeup artists have turned to this platform. Manny Mua, Patrick Starrr, and Wayne Goss have set a precedent for the success of male beauty vloggers, and they've opened up space for others who we expect to see take advantage of it this year.

Eyebrows become a canvas for artistic creativity

Eyebrows become a canvas for artistic creativity

Last year brought us eyelid, roots, and even armpit (yes, armpit) art, so we anticipate a surge in eyebrow art in the New Year. We've seen hints of this with metallic brow product launches, razor eyebrow slits, and rainbow brow coloring, but there will be even greater creative license given this year. Perhaps something like the picturesque mini painting we saw on eyelids last year? Only time will tell.

More nail rehab products offered

With gel and acrylic nails trending big time, we can only hope there are more nail rehabbing products released this year. There are some nail masks and restorative treatments already on the market, but we expect to see additions — especially those specifically geared at nourishing nails that may be damaged.

Kylie Jenner expands product line to nails

In 2015, we saw the release — and within-minutes sellout — of Kylie Jenner's lip kit, as well as the launch of her personal app. She's already confirmed via this app that 2016 will see a release of a full makeup line, but we don't think she'll stop there. We're betting that she'll expand this to include nail polishes and products as well — maybe even press-ons of her now-iconic talons.

Bangs make a comeback

Bangs make a comeback

"I saw Kate Middleton wearing bangs, so I got bangs." — Everyone in 2016.

Seriously, Middleton's statement haircut was basically the best thing that could have happened to bangs — or fringe, as she likely calls it. Bangs are no longer mom-ish or childlike; they've officially transitioned into chic. If you're new and/or nervous about this cut, we suggest channeling the duchess herself and opting for a shaggy, layered look.

Beauty and fashion brands embrace natural hair

Beauty and fashion brands embrace natural hair

Maria Borges made serious waves when she sported her natural hair on the runway of the last Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, especially considering that she'd worn a weave the previous two shows. She set a precedent for this event, but we anticipate seeing more models who work with major beauty and fashion brands following her lead. Overall, women will be encouraged to sport and accentuate their natural locks, whether they be wavy, curly, straight, or coiled.

Caitlyn Jenner partners with a beauty brand

Caitlyn Jenner had an amazing year in 2015, including her emergence as a beauty icon. While last year kicked off what has become the Caitlyn Jenner brand, we can expect to see that expand this year — including, but not limited to, a product collaboration with a beauty label. We wouldn't be surprised to see a release of lipsticks or nail polishes in her signature classy color palette.

"Clean" beauty products take over

"Clean" beauty products take over

Clean, organic diets have transitioned into the mainstream, and they have inspired an external shift to match the internal. We've seen more and more beauty product brands emerge that focus on "clean," natural beauty products, and we think they'll continue to take hold in 2016, when consumers are going to be looking to spend money on the equivalent of a "Whole 30" on their skin. Brands like Eminence and Nip+Fab are getting ahead of the curve by offering kale products, pulling right at a vegan's heartstrings.

More women opt for androgynous haircuts

More women opt for androgynous haircuts

Pixies have already been gaining some momentum, but this year is pushing the limits with a buzzcut trend for women. We saw a ton of shaved heads on the runways for Spring 2016 collections, and high-fashion models including Soekie Gravenhorst, Tamy Glauser, and Kris Gottschalk are all currently sporting this look. With such examples, we believe more nonmodels (aka us regular folk) will take the clipper plunge.

Glossy skin becomes this year's dewy look

Glossy is the new wave of the dewy-skin trend, and we expect to see it everywhere this year in the form of applying balm to the nose, cheeks, eyelids, and cupid's bow. We saw this haute-sweaty look on Alexander Wang and Opening Ceremony's runways, and beauty-lovers everywhere will have a chance to get in on the action as glistening highlights go mainstream.

Red lipstick is replaced by other colors

Everyone and their mother (literally) has tried out the bold, red lip by now, but we're anticipating that other colors will get in on the action in 2016. Purple lipstick was everywhere last Summer, and with rainbow hair and blue eye shadow trending, we believe other bright lipstick colors will replace red as the go-to eye-popping look this year. Blue ombré lips, anyone?

Maximalism is the hottest makeup trend

Maximalism is the hottest makeup trend

After polar opposite trends of contouring and no-makeup makeup both hit hard in 2015, we're all ready for an in-between option to emerge. Maximalism, the trend focusing on a singular statement element, is likely to be the answer to our prayers. Envision contoured cheeks, a single swipe of bright shadow on the lids, or spider-like lashes will be paired with a subdued makeup look on the rest of the face.

The classic ponytail braid replaces the topknot

The classic ponytail braid replaces the topknot

If there was one hairstyle that took over 2015, it was the topknot. Unpolished and easy on the go, it's about as far as you can get from our prediction for 2016's hottest hairstyle: the ponytail braid. We saw a ton of these classic, sleek looks on the runways for Spring 2016, and expect the tight style to replace topknots this year completely.

Hair art gets even more experimental

Hair art gets even more experimental

Glittered roots and Star Wars-inspired 'dos showed hints of where we believe artistic expression will go for hair this year. We expect to see more inventive ways of coloring, cutting, braiding, and adorning your locks and more freedom for stylists to use your head as a canvas.
