Queer Eye Got Rid of This Contestant's Mullet — but Now it Seems to Be Back in Style

During the first episode of season four of Queer Eye, the Fab Five traveled to grooming expert Jonathan Van Ness's alma mater in Quincy, IL to give his extremely dedicated high school music teacher Kathi Dooley a makeover and get rid of the mullet she's had for decades. However, Teen Vogue is now reporting that influencers are wearing the "step mullet" and making it the newest hair trend.

The haircut is essentially a mullet with a longer piece cut in front of the ear, looking like a step. Masami Hosono, creative director of salon Vacancy Project, told the magazine that she thinks the look started almost by mistake. "I really think it comes from people who cut their own hair . . . kind of accident-based, DIY, just chopped your step with kitchen scissors," she said. The look is often paired with bangs and works well for those with both straight and curly hair.

While the look may remind you of stars of the '60s and '70s like Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, and Joan Jett, we're not sure if that's what Dooley had in mind as she fundraised for the Quincy school district's music program (although she is definitely a rock star!). One of the first things Van Ness says to his former teacher on the episode (after showering her with well-deserved compliments) is that "I want to celebrate the fact that I'll be cutting your hair."

When it came time to transform Dooley's hair, Van Ness couldn't wait. "Kathi's name is Kathi Dooley, it is not Kathi 'Joe Dirt' Dooley," he said. "I will not have this mullet living anymore while my gay body walks this Earth." Van Ness probably didn't realize that her hair was about to blow up into a major trend once again. Regardless, Van Ness gave Dooley a supercute, vibrant red bob that she seemed very happy with.

Check out photos from Dooley's makeover ahead (that proves she's always been a trendsetter), as well as the new step mullet trend.
