As for many of the other characters, Ökvist worked with dozens of artists on set who helped sculpt prosthetics and design realistic features to help pull the looks off visually. For the Vikings specifically, the process involved making fake piercings, scars, and even skull plates.
"We did a lot of facial piercings and actually skull piercings, mirroring that to where we've got metal pieces forged into the skull," Ökvist said.
The show's first season was a playground for all kinds of interesting costumes and character designs, and according to Ökvist, there's plenty more where that came from. "We invented quite a lot of things but what is interesting now is that — for season two, we're doing quite a lot of development for that now," she said.
