2021's Biggest Eye-Makeup Trends Took My Smize Game to the Next Level
After the year that was 2020, it's no surprise that 2021 makeup trends are bold, bright, eclectic, and above all over-the-top. You can speak volumes without saying a word with a simple wing and feathery lashes or a smoldering, bold smoky eye. If eyes are the windows to the soul, then eye makeup is the drapery and molding that frame them. Eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, brow products galore — eye makeup is truly where makeup and art intersect.
Since we will continue to wear masks for the foreseeable future, eye makeup will make a statement more than ever. From colored mascara and white eyeliner to bringing back the '80s and '90s, I tried most of the 2021 eye-makeup trends so that you can incorporate them into your own life. These looks can work with or without a mask — you can even match your eye makeup to your masks. Some of these trends are definitely a challenge but don't worry. I got you covered on the tips and tricks I used, including all products you need to get the look and make it your own.
'80s and '90s Pastel
The '80s and '90s are making a comeback this year. I used the Haus Laboratories Four-Way Shadow Palette in Runaway ($24) to get this vibrant and playful look. I also recommend the Huda Beauty Mercury Retrograde Eyeshadow Palette ($67) and the ZOEVA Sweet Glamour Eyeshadow Palette ($28). Make sure you prime your lids with the Urban Decay Primer Potion ($24).
White Eyeliner
Attempting the white eyeliner trend was a challenge for me. I used the NYX Professional Makeup White Liquid Liner ($7) which has a wonderful color pay-off but the brush is not stiff at all. The liner kept getting in my lashes and all over the place. If you are not skilled at using a liquid liner with a softer brush, check out the SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Wink-It Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner - Waterproof ($14), or SEPHORA COLLECTION Glide Liner ($14) instead! I also used the Milk Makeup Kush High Volumizing Mascara ($24) to lengthen my lashes.
Colored Mascara
Colored lashes are a trend I never expected to love as much as I do. I first primed my lashes with Urban Decay Subversion Lash Primer ($22) and used the L'Oréal Voluminous Original Mascara ($9). My eyeliner is Lancôme Artliner Precision Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner ($31). I also recommend the Fenty Beauty Full Frontal Volume, Lift & Curl Mascara ($14).
Lavender Eyeshadow
It's purple's time to shine. Lavender lids are a perfect way to brighten up your 2021. I recommend the Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Eyeshadow Palette ($49), the HUDA BEAUTY Pastel Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Lilac Obsessions ($29), and Juvia's Place The Violets Eyeshadow Palette ($14). I lined my eyes with the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($22).
Glossy Lids and Lips
Take #skinamilism to the next level. The glossy eyes and lips trend is the go-to for when you want to embrace your inner glow. I swiped a neutral shade over my lids and then dabbed a bit of my all-time favorite Lancôme Juicy Tubes Original Lip Gloss ($20) on my lids and lips. The shine is unreal. If you're in the market for a neutral palette I recommend the ColourPop Nude Mood Eyeshadow Palette ($14) for warmer-tones and the Persona Identity Eyeshadow Palette ($42) for cooler-tones. You can also get the look with the NUDESTIX Glow, Glow, Glow 3pcs Set ($25).
Bold and Bright Technicolor Lids
Technicolor lids are probably the most adventurous I've have ever gone. I primarily used all eyeliners and shadow sticks to get that bold and bright look. I recommend SEPHORA COLLECTION Colorful Shadow & Liner ($14) and Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eyeshadow ($29). Get all the shades you need to rock technicolor lids with the NYX Professional Makeup Brights Ultimate Shadow Palette ($18) and the Violet Voss Tie Die 4 Eyeshadow Palette ($36). I also used the Lilly Lashes 3D Mink ($30) for a real dramatic effect.
