Good news for anyone who wants to establish a skin-care routine with fewer controversial ingredients without derailing their budget this year. e.l.f. Cosmetics has just launched a brand-new, dermatologist-developed skin-care line, Pure Skin, filled with "e.l.f. clean" product essentials — all of which ring in at $15 or less.

As you may know, the word "clean" isn't universally defined in the beauty industry and can mean different things to different brands. That's partly what can make shopping for ingredient-conscious skin care so confusing. For e.l.f. Cosmetics, "e.l.f. clean" means the product formulas "surpass" FDA and European Union Cosmetic Regulation standards and are free of over 1,600 ingredients.

In general, according to the brand, all e.l.f. Cosmetics product formulas are free of ingredients like parabens, phthalates, sulfates, nonylphenol ethoxylates, triclosan, triclocarban, and hydroquinone. The products in the Pure Skin line are also free of fragrance, which is a huge benefit for those with sensitive skin.

The line currently consists of three daily skin-care products: a gentle, nonirritating cream cleanser; a nongreasy moisturizer; and a hydrating toner. Each formula is infused with oat milk and niacinamide to soothe the skin, minimize the appearance of pores, and even out skin tone, along with other hydrating, nourishing ingredients.

Speaking of moisturizer, moisturizing is an essential daily skin-care step, so it's important to find a formula that doesn't cause more issues — think breakouts and irritation. The e.l.f. Cosmetics Pure Skin Moisturizer ($12) has a noncomedogenic, fragrance-free formula that's described by the brand as rich yet nongreasy. It's also said to wear well under makeup.
