This year has been one big nostalgic trip for kids who grew up in the early 2000s. Old shows and movies are getting rebooted left and right, our favorite bands are reuniting, and some of the biggest fashion trends from back in the day are suddenly cool again. In fact, 2019 is basically 2006 all over again, albeit with a few slight modifications. Don't believe me? Take a look at some of the biggest pop culture moments from 2006 and see how history is repeating itself.
In 2006, the Jonas Brothers released their debut studio album, It's About Time, with Columbia Records. Though they were eventually dropped by the label in early 2007, they went on to sign with Hollywood Records shortly after and quickly become one of the biggest music groups at the time.
Though the band split in 2013, earlier this year they announced that they were reuniting for a brand-new album with Republic Records. Their first single, "Sucker," was a huge hit with fans and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the Jonas Brothers' first No. 1 song. Their fifth album, Happiness Begins, came out in June, followed by their show-stopping tour.
Remember when all your favorite celebrities would pair their midriff-baring top with a pair of baggy khaki pants? At every red carpet event, you would see another star in cargo pants.
Interestingly enough, the cargo pants craze is back in style. It must be all those handy pockets for storage! The trend has taken over the fashion world, namely the runway. Cargo pants were all the rage during the Spring '19 runways, including Gigi Hadid's look during the Fendi show in Milan, and since then, they've been one of the biggest fashion trends of 2019.
In 2005, the singing sister duo released their first album, Into the Rush, through Hollywood Records. At the time, Aly was still starring on Disney Channel's Phil of the Future. The album was eventually rereleased in August 2006, with three new songs, including their hit "Chemicals React."
In May 2019, Aly & AJ released Sanctuary through their independent label, Aly & AJ Music LLC. The EP was a follow-up to their 2017 EP, Ten Years, which was their first release in 10 years under the name Aly & AJ.
Following the major success of Laguna Beach, Lauren Conrad packed up her bags and headed to LA for the show's spinoff series, The Hills, in 2006. The reality series ran for six seasons before ultimately ending in 2010.
Nearly 10 years after the series ended, MTV announced that it is rebooting the reality show. The Hills: New Beginnings premiered in June and featured original cast members and their kids and follow their personal and professional lives.
Remember when Miley Cyrus was best known as her alter ego, Hannah Montana? In 2006, the actress quickly rose to fame with her hit Disney Channel series about a normal teenager living a double life as a pop singer. During the show's four-season run, Miley began to release her own music under Hollywood Records, including her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus, which was part of a double album with the soundtrack for Hannah Montana season two.
Since her Disney Channel days, Miley has gone on to establish herself as an artist apart from Hannah Montana with the release of multiple hit albums, including her most recent, Younger Now, in 2017. Though Miley has put Hannah in her past, this year she made fans really nostalgic when she cut and dyed her hair exactly like the Disney Channel character. She really embraced her roots by singing along to some of her biggest hits, including "Best of Both Worlds." While there's no word on whether Hannah Montana will make a comeback, Miley released an EP titled SHE IS COMING in May.
In May 2006, Supernatural season one had just wrapped up on The WB. Though the series received mixed reactions during its first season, it eventually became a staple on The CW.
After becoming The CW's longest-running show ever and gaining a massive fandom, this year, the series announced that it was officially ending with its upcoming 15th season. It really is the end of an era!
Back in the early 2000s, tie-dye was one of the hottest fashion trends, worn by celebrities like Paris Hilton, Hilary Duff, and Gwen Stefani.

Taylor's country music days seem like FOREVER ago. In 2006, released her debut single (yes, her very first single), "Tim McGraw," with Big Machine Records. Her debut album, titled Taylor Swift, released later that year. Taylor was 16 at the time.
Flash-forward 13 years later, Taylor is now a full-fledged pop star and coming back on the music scene yet again. Following her sixth album, Reputation, Taylor released her brand-new single "ME!" in April through her new label Republic Records. She released her seventh album, Lover, in August.
Following a nearly three-year hiatus, the Backstreet Boys released their comeback album Never Gone in 2005. The group then embarked on their Never Gone Tour, which ended in February 2006. That year, Kevin Richardson announced his plans to leave the group. He later rejoined BSB in 2012.
Just like in 2006, the Backstreet Boys are fresh off a big music comeback. Following their 2013 album In a World Like This, the group released their ninth studio album, DNA, this January. The album debuted at number one, marking their first No. 1 album in almost two decades. After wrapping up their successful Las Vegas residency, BSB embarked on their DNA World Tour for the album.
Back in the day, low-rise jeans became popular after stars like Britney Spears, Beyoncé, and Paris Hilton sported the look. The jeans were usually paired with a midriff-baring top or a belt chain.
Whether we like it or not, the low-rise jean trend is slowly making a comeback. A few models, like Bella Hadid, have sported the look, and fashion houses like Gucci, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel have even included the trend in recent runways.
In 2006, the release of High School Musical jumpstarted the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and many more. The TV movie musical immediately became a Disney Channel phenomenon and was followed up with two more movies, High School Musical 2 in 2007 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008.
More than 10 years after the release of the first film, Disney+ rebooted the beloved franchise with a brand-new series titled, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The 10-episode series picks up 15 years after the first film as a group of theater students perform High School Musical. Yes, they're performing music from the first movie.
The Nickelodeon series first premiered in 1994, and ran for 10 seasons until its cancellation in 2005. The sketch comedy helped bolster the careers of actors like Kenan Thompson, Kel Mitchell, Amanda Bynes, and Jamie Lynn Spears.
In February 2019, Nickelodeon announced that it was reviving the beloved series, with original stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell as executive producers. The show premiered on June 15 with the Jonas Brothers as musical guest stars.
