Empire's Jussie Smollett Speaks Publicly About His Sexuality For the First Time

Empire star Jussie Smollett talked publicly about his sexuality in a moving interview with Ellen DeGeneres on Friday. The actor — whose character Jamal recently came out as gay — made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about the hit Fox drama but declined to discuss his personal life or relationship status. Shortly after the interview, Jussie asked Ellen to film a special chat with him backstage, where he clarified his reasons for not talking about his personal life. Before praising the host for her contributions to the LGBT community, Jussie said, "It was really important to me to make sure that it got across that there is no closet," adding, "There's never been a closet that I've been in. I don't own a closet, I got a dresser, but I don't have a closet . . . I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home." He went on to say that just because he doesn't discuss his personal life, "It is in no way to hide or deny who God made me."
