Kristi Yamaguchi Tells Nancy Kerrigan to "Break a Leg" in Unfortunate Tweet

Figure skating legend Nancy Kerrigan joined the cast of Dancing With the Stars's 24th season, and ahead of the big premiere, fellow Olympian Kristi Yamaguchi tweeted some words of encouragement to her. But what seemed like an innocent "good luck" took on a new meaning, and it didn't take long for the tweet to go viral after people picked up on the unfortunate choice of words.

Kristi's message β€” specifically the "break a leg" β€” had Twitter freaking out once they remembered that Nancy actually did nearly break her leg when she was infamously attacked by a man hired by the ex-husband and bodyguard of her skating competitor Tonya Harding in January 1994. After a practice session at the US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit, assailant Shane Stant struck Nancy above the knee with a professional-grade security baton in an attempt to break her leg so she wouldn't be able to compete in the 1994 Winter Olympics. Her leg wasn't broken (just badly bruised), but Nancy's injury did force her to withdraw from the national championship.

Though Tonya won that event, she and Nancy were both chosen for the Olympic team. In what many consider karma, Tonya finished in eighth place in the Games, while Nancy won the silver medal. And as for Kristi? We highly doubt she meant anything shady with her tweet β€” but the internet will always remember.
