Ryan Gosling SNL Opening Monologue September 2017

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone Make Fun of Their La La Land Characters on SNL

Who knew a monologue about jazz could be so absurdly funny? During the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, host Ryan Gosling opened the show with a monologue about how he "saved jazz" with his role in La La Land — a nod to a common critique of the film.

Naturally, the low-key comedic genius then took to the piano to explain what jazz is. At approximately two minutes, 35 seconds into the monologue, Ryan couldn't hold it together and started cracking up . . . pretty much setting the tone for the rest of the episode.

As Ryan continued to poke fun at his jazz-obsessed character, his La La Land costar, Emma Stone, came out to give him a little pep talk. "What're you doing? Ryan, you didn't save jazz," she said. "We saved jazz." Watch the genuinely funny and self-aware skit above.
