In a Reddit AMA, he told fans that he's most influenced by '90s music — both '90s country and '90s R&B — and he added, "The first time I heard 'Nice & Slow' by Usher is my first memory for being very captivated by that style of music."

Sam's been open about how an ex-girlfriend inspired much of his Montevallo album, and he said that she's "okay with her involvement" in the record, adding, "The experience that inspired 'Break Up in a Small Town' are drawn more from the time I spent back home in high school."

The singer told Rolling Stone that it "took him a while" to get over the fact that he didn't know anybody else who played football and played music. After sharing some songs with his roommates, though, they pressed him to play at bars.

After he graduated from college, Sam was invited to training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was briefly a free agent for the team but decided he was more interested in music.
