When It Comes to the Coolest YouTubers, Emma Chamberlain Is the One to Know

Though Emma's YouTube channel started out with a focus on DIY crafts, she quickly realized that art was not her thing — despite her genes. Her father, Michael, is an oil painter, and the subject of his work is "everyday objects and scenes."

Emma has said that his oil paintings — while beautiful — couldn't always support the family financially. "My dad is an artist, and he got sick for a little bit and couldn't paint, so there was hard times for our family," she told Forbes. "And he's doing great now. But having no money at certain points was weird."

In high school, Emma was a member of the California All Stars Pink cheer team and regularly competed with her team. Needless to say, she was one of the sassiest members of the squad.

While attending Dame High School in Belmont, CA, Emma was an active participant on the track and field team, often competing in relays and events. Her events of choice included the 800-meter, hurdles, and 4x400-meter relays.

In March, Emma was flown out to Paris by YouTube and Louis Vuitton to attend the famed fashion line's Fall/Winter show. "Um I don't know how this actually happened but thank you Louis Vuitton and YouTube for having me," she wrote on Instagram while decked out in Louis Vuitton couture. "I had the best time ever. Hopefully I'll be back someday."

As Emma was becoming disinterested in school her sophomore year, she hoped that her driver's license might give her some relief and a means of escape. Unfortunately, she didn't pass — but there was a silver lining. "I'm grateful every day that I failed my driver's test that one day, because if I wouldn't have failed my driver's test, I probably would've never made a YouTube channel," she confessed in one of her videos. Fascinating, considering she was first known for her unique car vlogs.

Emma's insanely cool fashion sense is inspired by a mix of Instagram and Pinterest, and she spent plenty of time on the latter while sitting in class back in high school. "Funny story about why I use Pinterest a lot," she told Fashionista. "When I was in high school, we were allowed to have our laptops out and a lot of the websites, like Instagram, Facebook, stuff like that, were blocked and the only one that wasn't blocked was Pinterest, so all the girls got super into Pinterest."

She may not have a talent for DIY, but Emma does have an eye for photography. She frequently posts her latest work on her VSCO page, which often includes selfies and dreamy photo shoots.

Given her incredible success on YouTube, it only makes sense that podcasting would also come naturally. On her new show, Stupid Genius With Emma Chamberlain, she sets out to answer a puzzling question each week. "Podcasting was always something I knew I needed to try," she explained. "And being a professional word-vomiter has to come in handy at some point, right? Now, here we are!"

Though she makes it look easy, being a professional YouTuber is actually a lot of work. "For the first couple of days of editing, it's easy, it's fun, I'm enjoying it," she explained in a video about why she doesn't post as much as her fans would like. "I'll spend hours in a day editing, and it feels like nothing . . . but, since my videos take, like, 30 hours to edit, I'll quickly feel like it will never end."
