HyunA and Dawn Are Reportedly Back Together Just 2 Months After Calling Off Engagement

In a November 2019 episode of the Korean variety show "Knowing Bros," HyunA revealed she started to develop feelings for Dawn almost two years before they began dating in 2016. "I made it obvious [that I liked him] but he said he never noticed," HyunA said about her one-sided crush on Dawn. While he initially saw HyunA as a friend, Dawn eventually began to reciprocate her feelings the more he got to know her. "I thought she was an amazing sunbae and that kind of opened up my heart," he said.

HyunA said she finally told Dawn how she felt about him sometime in 2016. "I said to him, 'I have something I want to tell you. I've liked you for a long time and I tried to let you know [but] we weren't in a situation where I could confess to you first," HyunA revealed on "Knowing Bros." When she asked Dawn to please "wait" for her, she said he responded by saying, "Why? Can't we just date now?"

HyunA was so happy to hear Dawn liked her back, and from then on, the two officially became a couple — albeit a secret one.

In April 2017, HyunA, Dawn, and Pentagon's Hui dropped their first music video, "365 Fresh," as the K-pop trio Triple H. The music video featured blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments of fire chemistry between HyunA and Dawn, including a kiss. While fans mostly brushed it off as acting for the sake of the music video, others couldn't help but suspect their chemistry was too real to just be for the cameras.

In May 2017, Triple H debuted with their first EP, "199X," which reached No. 10 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. The group made their first comeback over a year later in July 2018 with their second EP, "Retro Futurism," and accompanying single "Retro Future." Sadly, that turned out to be the last project Triple H would drop together.

Just weeks after Triple H dropped their second EP, the group's comeback was unfortunately overshadowed by dating rumors about HyunA and Dawn, which their company quickly shut down. "HyunA and [Dawn] are not dating. This is groundless [news]," Cube Entertainment said in a statement at the time, according to Soompi. However, that didn't stop fans from speculating that HyunA and Dawn were more than friends.

A day after Cube Entertainment denied HyunA and Dawn were an item, the stars reportedly told "Yonhap News" they were dating. The couple said they decided to make their relationship public because they didn't want to keep the truth from their fans. "While we knew that [dating publicly] would cause us to be linked in some way, both of us felt that it would be hard to meet our fans' eyes [while performing] on stage," HyunA and Dawn said about continuing to keep their relationship a secret. "We wanted to honestly tell our fans and show ourselves confidently having fun performing."

A month after the couple went public with their relationship, Cube released a statement on Sept. 13, 2018, saying HyunA and Dawn were fired from the company. "When we manage artists, we consider mutual trust and faith our top priority," Cube told the "Korea Herald" about their decision to part ways with the stars. "We decided the trust is broken beyond repair, so we are expelling the two from our company."

Due to the backlash from HyunA and Dawn's fans, Cube released a new statement a day after their original message clarifying they are still considering the couple's future with the company. "The opinions of the artists are also important, so it needs to be handled carefully. We'll have a board meeting next week to discuss this issue," Cube Entertainment's CEO Shin Dae-nam told "Yonhap News" at the time.

Cube terminated its contact with HyunA on Oct. 15, 2018, and then parted ways with Dawn on Nov. 14. Luckily, their music careers didn't stop there, because HyunA and Dawn went on to join Psy's record label, P-Nation, on Jan. 27, 2019. The stars have since released multiple projects with the company and are still with P-Nation to this day.

In September 2021, HyunA and Dawn dropped an EP together called "1+1=1." The project featured their hit single "Ping Pong," which peaked at No. 10 on Billboard's US World Digital Song Sales Chart. During an interview with Hypebae that September, HyunA revealed Dawn wrote the song and asked her to feature on it. "I woke up one day and he told me, 'I was going to write my own song but ended up with something for the both of us,'" she recalled.

In that same interview, Dawn said he loved working with his girlfriend on a track because they make a great team. "HyunA knows me a lot more than even I know myself," he said. "We know each other's strengths so we can trust each other to put out our best."

HyunA and Dawn announced their engagement on Feb. 3 in the cutest way possible: by sharing Instagrams showing off their matching opal rings. Dawn captioned his video, "Marry Me," while HyunA captioned hers, "Of course it's a yes." Considering all the hardships the couple went through to be together, fans are so happy their love story got a happy ending!

In an Instagram post, Dawn shared the news that the pair ended their relationship. The brief message read in Korean, "We broke up. We decided to remain as good friends and colleagues from now on. Thank you always for your support and for looking over us fondly."

After a netizen circulated a photoshopped image that appeared to show an account belonging to Dawn accusing HyunA of lying and cheating on him throughout their relationship, Dawn defended his ex against the falsified claims in a now-deleted Instagram post(via Koreaboo). "Hello, this is DAWN. This won't be long," he wrote. "I'm going to sue that cowardly, dirty, pathetic person who spread that false information while pretending to be me. Even if we broke up, she is still precious to me and both more sincere and cooler than anyone I've ever met before. She is an artist that I will love the most in the future. Please don't live like this and use your precious time on Earth in a good way."

On Jan. 27, Korean news outlet News1 reported that HyunA and Dawn have reunited as a couple. According to a Koreaboo translation, insiders reported that the pair traveled together overseas for work commitments and were affectionate while there.

A representative for HyunA and Dawn swiftly refuted the reports that the pair attended work commitments together overseas, but could not confirm whether or not the pair were, in fact, dating again. In a statement via Wikitree (translated by Koreaboo), the representative said, "The two have never gone to schedules together. They only meet sometimes to eat together. I will verify if they are back together." A rep for HyunA and Dawn could not be contacted by POPSUGAR for further comment.
