Issa Rae Celebrates Her Final Emmys Appearance For "Insecure": "It Is So Validating"

Issa Rae hit the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday night in style for her final appearance on behalf of "Insecure." The multihyphenate stepped onto the red carpet at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, where she recapped the legacy of her hit HBO series to People.

"I know that the lasting legacy is that we opened doors for a lot of creators, for a lot of talent, for the industry to view us, Black women, differently," she said on the Emmys red carpet. "I hope the legacy is that we go down as people's favorite show. I stand by that. For me, it was just about becoming a part of people's lives through the music, through the stories, through everything, and to hear that people miss it is so validating and fulfilling."

This year, Rae's "Insecure" snagged three Emmy nominations, including outstanding actress in a comedy series for the creator. "Insecure" wrapped up its five-season run in December 2021 with an emotional series finale and a documentary special, "Insecure: The End," celebrating the show's epic journey. For its fifth season, the show earned Emmy nods for outstanding single-camera picture editing for a comedy series and outstanding cinematography for a single-camera series (half-hour).

Rae celebrated her show's Emmy nominations in July right after they were announced and gave shout-outs to her "'Insecure' fam" — including showrunner Prentice Penny and costars Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis — as well as fellow nominees like Robin Thede for "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and Quinta Brunson for "Abbott Elementary." Lately, the creator has been keeping busy with her other TV projects, including HBO Max's "Sweet Life: Los Angeles" and "Rap Sh!t," the latter of which was just renewed for a second season.
