Will Smith and Chris Rock's Complicated History Predates the Oscars Slap

On March 30, the Academy released a statement saying it had begun disciplinary proceedings as a result of Smith's actions at the Oscars. Per Variety, the statement read: "The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy's Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy."

The Academy also noted that Smith was formally asked to leave during the ceremony, but he refused to do so. However, sources later refuted the claims to Variety, saying he was not urged to leave the show.
