8 Devilishly Feminist Moments From Chilling Adventures of Sabrina's Second Season

When chapter two begins, Sabrina is attending the Academy of Unseen Arts full-time. She wastes zero time becoming a feminist icon by entering the school's Top Boy competition, a series of Goblet of Fire-style challenges meant to decide who will best represent and serve as an example for other students. Of course Father Blackwood throws a misogynistic stink about it, and even Ambrose's boyfriend, Luke, tells her, "It's Top Boy for a reason, Sabrina."*

Even though Sabrina doesn't officially get the top boy role (it ends up going to Ambrose), she still ends up saving the Academy from witch hunters and saving the coven from Father Blackwood's horribly sexist doctrine.

*Luke turns up dead a few episodes later. I'm not saying his shady comment had anything to do with it, but. . . may he rest in peace, I guess!

The way Chilling Adventures handled Theo's transition was excellent for many reasons, and I love the way it was introduced. Theo (formerly Susie) has dreams of trying out for the school basketball team, but as usual, the patriarchy tries to step in and crush them. You see, Baxter High only has a basketball team for boys, something both the coach and the meatheads on the team remind Theo of. But thankfully, Ms. Wardwell — sorry, Principal Wardwell — has other plans. Because when does she not?

Wardwell storms into the gym with Theo, Ros, and Harvey, ready to knock some satanical sense into Coach Craven. She asserts her power by reminding him to refer to her as Principal, then says, "There shall be absolutely no gender discrimination at Baxter High under my regime." Boss sh*t! Thanks to Wardwell, Theo tries out; and thanks to Sabrina casting a spell from the bleachers, he snags a spot on the team.

Hilda and Dr. Cerberus strike up a romance in season one, and even though I just knew something was up with him, I was still in full support of Hilda having a love interest. In season two, things have cooled between the couple; Dr. Cee seems to be distancing himself for no apparent reason (typical dude!), and Hilda assumes it's because of something she did or said wrong, because as it turns out, witches have the same dating dilemmas as mortal women.

Zelda helps her sister get up the nerve to confront Dr. Cee about his feelings for her and, um, raise his interest a bit. She shows up at the shop in a showstopping leopard dress and gets Dr. Cee so excited that he transforms into a werewolf — I knew something was up! — and explains that he is possessed by an incubus that strikes when his "passions are inflamed." Hilda makes him so hot and bothered that he can't let himself be near her. He tells her he loves her, which inspires Hilda to tell him that she's a witch. She was brave enough to assert her sexuality and ended up getting answers, as well as an "I love you." Come through, Auntie!

Hilda has some serious backbone this season, am I right? She summons the witches' council with a plea for help defeating Father Blackwood and his archaic doctrine. When they dismiss her concerns and shrug her off, she doubles back and goes in on those warlock geezers!

"You sit there on your platform and your privilege, and you pretend you're better than the rest, and you're not," she says, trembling under the weight of her own badassery. Then she calls them "arses" and heads out. Iconic!

After Ambrose helps Sabrina with a spell to create a double of herself with a mandrake root, her twin comes alive and starts wreaking havoc. Father Blackwood tasks his creepy Judas club members to track down and kill Sabrina, so when the two men come across her tethered in the woods, they square up. One calls her a "loud-mouthed bitch," which is really never a good idea, you know?

She puts them under a binding spell, which prompts another idiot to call her a "crazy whore." Charming! Anyway, the mandrake-root-tethered Sabrina snaps the necks of all four gentlemen before doing a little skip-hop away through the woods and continuing on her merry way. Words matter, is all I'm saying.

After being shamed by the Dark Lord and outwitted by pretty much all of the witches in his coven, Father Blackwood decides to take the twins, Judas and Judith (formerly Leticia), and go on the run. Near the end of the season two finale, we see Prudence and Ambrose — who are sure to be my new favorite crime-fighting duo — armed and ready to hunt down Daddy Blackwood and save her baby sister from having to grow up with him (and one day marry her own twin brother, yikes).

Before making their way out of the empty Academy, Prudence pulls out her swords and slices the head off of the Judas statue, samurai-style. It represents not only the end of Father Blackwood's tyranny over the coven but the beginning of her own freedom. If that wasn't badass enough, Prudence then lets out a sigh of relief and casually tells Ambrose, "Come along!"

By the end of the finale, Principal Wardwell — who I suppose we're just calling Lilith now — gets on the winning team and helps Sabrina fight the Dark Lord for both of their freedom. After they successfully bind Satan in the body of Nicholas Scratch, it's finally Lilith's time to shine — though it was a pretty casual celebration.

I love how low-key this coronation was! After everything she goes through (and puts Sabrina through!), Lilith just plops the giant gold crown on her own head, throws out a couple of miracles to thank Sabrina for her service, and carries Satan-Nick into the pit of hell. But before she goes, Lilith reminds Sabrina of her power and freedom: "May you never give up either again."

With Father Blackwood in the wind and the Dark Lord out of commission, the handful of surviving members of the now-defunct Church of Night are left with nobody to worship. That is, until Zelda volunteers as tribute to be the new high priestess of the — you guessed it — Church of Lilith. It's a natural fit: not only is Zelda a bad b*tch from a prominent witch family, but she was robbed of her chance to rule side by side with Father Blackwood after he a) puts her under a submission spell; and b) plots to murder her entire family. That's a dealbreaker.

By the way, I can't wait to see Zelda in high priestess mode. She and Lilith have their beef, but I have to believe they'll team up at some point to lead the church and take on the stodgy witches' council.
