It's hard to imagine anyone but Streep playing the infamous fashion editor, but it almost happened. The actress revealed to Variety that she almost walked away from the project when she thought her offer was too low. Thankfully, the producers doubled her salary on the spot.

That's right. The film's first choice for the role was actually Rachel McAdams. However, she turned down the role.

In order to keep things more real on screen, the actress stayed pretty cool toward Hathaway while filming. "She pulled me aside at the beginning of the film and said, 'Listen, I just want to say, I think you're perfect. I'm so excited that we're going to be working together, but that's the last nice thing I'm going to say to you.' And it was!" Hathaway told ET.

During her auditioning tape, the UK native decided to read her lines in "a stern British accent," even though her character was meant to be an American, and director David Frankel ended up keeping it.

While there have been many connections between Streep's character and real-life fashion editor Anna Wintour, the actress claims she actually got the voice from Clint Eastwood. "He never, ever, ever raises his voice and everyone has to lean in to listen, and he is automatically the most powerful person in the room," she said during an interview with Variety.

The actor didn't actually get the role until 72 hours before he began shooting. You could almost say it was fate that he joined the project, because he actually ended up marrying his costar Emily Blunt's sister, Felicity.

Even though several other actresses auditioned for the role, Carla Hacken, the studio's former executive vice president, said Streep was always who they wanted. "I don't remember anything other than, 'Please God — let it be Meryl,'" she told Variety.

Even though the movie is a blockbuster now, getting the film made wasn't as easy. It actually took Fox several years to bring the project to the big screen.

Since she wasn't the first choice for the role, Hathaway had to get creative. After she met Hacken for the first time, she told Variety that she actually left "hire me" written in the sand of a zen garden so that the executive would discover it after their meeting.

During a table read, Streep changed the last line of the film from "Everybody wants to be me" to "Everybody wants to be us."
