6 Reasons Lady Dynamite Needs to Be Your New Obsession

This show is anything but formulaic. It jumps around, it breaks the fourth wall, and the writing is constantly acknowledging the fact that "yes, this is a TV show." One scene is referred to as "The Serious Scene," every episode includes a flashback to "the past," and sometimes both Maria and a child play Maria — in the same scene. It makes sense contextually, trust me.

I don't laugh out loud at TV shows or movies a lot, but I did find myself audibly chuckling at some of the weirder humor in Lady Dynamite, and that's a major breakthrough for me.

In real life, Bamford has been very open about struggling with OCD and being diagnosed as type 2 bipolar. The character of Maria also exhibits symptoms of these conditions, and it's refreshing to see such an honest (yet bizarrely funny) portrayal of these illnesses on screen.

There is some truly spot-on humor about universal topics like families, relationships, and fears hidden in this show.

Bridget Everett, Ana Gasteyer, Mo Collins, and Lennon Parham are all regulars on the show, while comedians like Patton Oswalt, June Diane Raphael, Jenny Slate, Missi Pyle, Judd Apatow, Mira Sorvino, Andrew Daly, Adam Pally, Sarah Silverman, Jon Cryer, Brian Posehn, and Kenny and Keith Lucas appear in one or more episodes. Plus, Supermen Dean Cain and Brandon Routh are in the mix. How can you say no to that lineup?

Finally, Maria brings her love for pugs into the show by featuring three little guys on the show. If Bert isn't your favorite, get out of my life.
