The Opening Credits

The Opening Credits

The opening credits are quite similar to the original film, as they portray images of London set to the film's instrumental soundtrack. If you look close enough during one of the opening scenes, you can actually see the bird lady from "Feed the Birds" sitting on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral.

Familiar Faces

Familiar Faces

Not much has changed when we finally arrive at the Banks home. Not only does Cherry Tree Lane look virtually the same, but the cooky Admiral Boom (David Warner) still lives next door and the family's maid, Ellen (Julie Walters), is still tending to the home.

Jane Following in Her Mother's Footsteps
Disney

Jane Following in Her Mother's Footsteps

It seems Winifred Banks's involvement in the suffragette movement inspired her daughter to become an activist as well. In the sequel, Jane (Emily Mortimer) is a proud member of a labor organization called SPRUCE which stands for the Society For the Protection of the Rights of the Underpaid Citizens of England.

Michael and Jane's Childhood Toys
Disney

Michael and Jane's Childhood Toys

As Michael (Ben Whishaw) looks for documents in the attic, he comes across some familiar toys tucked away in boxes. In addition to finding the old snow globe Mary Poppins holds when she sings "Feed the Birds," you can also see the toy blocks Jane and Michael played with in the nursery during "A Spoonful of Sugar."

05
The Kite

The Kite

Of course, the most memorable item Michael finds in the attic is their old kite. While it has some wear and tear to it, it still has the "Votes For Women" sash tied at the bottom as a tail.

06
The Wind Changing
Disney

The Wind Changing

Just like with the first film, the wind mysteriously changes when Mary Poppins arrives. There is even a nod to a scene from the first film when a dog starts barking at the wind.

07
Bert the Chimney Sweep
Disney

Bert the Chimney Sweep

While the kids are shocked to see a woman flying from the sky, Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda) is completely unfazed. It seems he learned of Mary Poppins's magical abilities from a chimney sweep he used to work alongside when he was a boy. Yep, Jack actually knows Bert. There's a reference to the memorable character (played by Dick Van Dyke) as Mary Poppins asks Jack how he's doing and he replies that he's traveling the world.

08
Michael and Jane's Reunion With Mary Poppins
Disney

Michael and Jane's Reunion With Mary Poppins

As Mary Poppins reunites with Michael and Jane, she recites some of her memorable lines from the first film. While she tells Michael to close his mouth because he's "not a codfish," she mentions that Jane is still a giggler, referring to when she measured the children with her magical tape and Jane's height said she was "rather inclined to giggle."

09
A Glance in the Mirror
Disney

A Glance in the Mirror

Mary Poppins still loves to admire herself in the mirror. As she enters the Banks home, she can't help but take a quick glance at her reflection and pat the back of her head like she does in the first film.

10
Mary Poppins's Talking Umbrella
Disney

Mary Poppins's Talking Umbrella

Mary Poppins puts her magical abilities on full display when she arrives at the Banks house. In addition to carrying around her trusty talking umbrella, Mary Poppins opts to glide up the stair rail when she goes to greet the children.

Turning a Task Into a Fun Game
Disney

Turning a Task Into a Fun Game

In the first film, Mary Poppins teaches the kids to tidy up the nursery with a fun game, but in Mary Poppins Returns, she manages to turn bath time into a fun adventure by taking the kids under the sea with dolphins.

12
Jumping Into Paintings
Disney

Jumping Into Paintings

Mary Poppins still has a knack for jumping into paintings. After the Banks children crack a bowl that belonged to their mother, the magical nanny suggests they jump inside the bowl to fix it. Even their outfits are similar to the ones Michael and Jane wear during their jolly holiday with Mary Poppins in the original film.

13
Dancing With Penguins
Disney

Dancing With Penguins

While inside the bowl, Mary Poppins and Jack take part in an extravagant number at the Royal Doulton Music Hall. As they sing "A Cover Is Not the Book" on stage, Jack even dances alongside a few penguins, just like Bert did in "Jolly Holiday."

14
The Real Jane Banks
Disney

The Real Jane Banks

Blink and you might miss the sweet cameo from the original Jane Banks. As Jane and Jack talk outside their home, a woman (actress Karen Dotrice) approaches them and asks where 19 Cherry Tree Lane is. When they tell her it's two doors down, she politely replies, "Many thanks, sincerely," giving a nod to the song "The Perfect Nanny" from the first film, where Jane and Michael sign off their letter for a new nanny with, "Many thanks, sincerely, Jane and Michael Banks."

15
Mary Poppins's Eccentric Relatives
Disney

Mary Poppins's Eccentric Relatives

In the first film, we met Mary Poppins's jolly uncle Albert (Ed Wynn), but this time around, we meet her eccentric cousin, Topsy (Meryl Streep). As the children go to her shop to get their bowl fixed, Topsy winds up turning their whole world upside down, literally. The scene is definitely reminiscent of the song "I Love to Laugh" from the first film.

16
Good Company With Chimney Sweeps
Disney

Good Company With Chimney Sweeps

While Jack's character certainly reminds us of Bert from the original film, the big chimney sweep number in Mary Poppins Returns, "Trip a Little Light Fantastic," is practically "Step in Time" 2.0.

17
Dick Van Dyke's Cameo
Disney

Dick Van Dyke's Cameo

One of the best references to the original film has to be Dick Van Dyke's cameo at the end of the movie. In the first film, he played the bank director Mr. Dawes, and in Mary Poppins Returns he plays his son, Mr. Dawes Jr. It's hard not to get a little choked up when the actor starts dancing and singing along to "Trip a Little Light Fantastic (Reprise)." He even makes a nod to the joke that made Mr. Dawes Sr. laugh to death in the first film when he begins to tell the kids the story about "a man with a wooden leg" before stopping himself and letting out a chuckle.

18
Flying High Above London
Disney

Flying High Above London

While Mary Poppins ends with the Banks family going outside to fly a kite, Mary Poppins Returns ends with the Banks family flying in the air. As they go to the park, a woman (Angela Lansbury) hands out magical balloons that allow everyone to float in the sky. The song, "Nowhere to Go But Up," is just as emotional as "Let's Go Fly a Kite" from the original movie.
