These 10 Thriller Books Are About to Become Star-Studded Films

Swedish crime writing duo Roslund and Hellström's 3 Seconds is coming to theaters on Aug. 16 as The Informer starring Joel Kinnaman. The book follows Piet Hoffman, an agent whose investigation into the Polish mafia lands him undercover in one of Sweden's most dangerous prisons with his cover in danger of being blown by a determined detective.

The movie adaptation of Nicholas Searle's The Good Liar will be released on Nov. 15 with Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen playing the lead roles. That gives you plenty of time to read the twisty tale of an aging con man named Roy who thinks he's found the perfect mark in the form of a wealthy widow, Betty. However, in true thriller fashion, not all is as it seems between Roy and Betty.

The movie based on A.J. Finn's bestselling novel The Woman in the Window is set to be released sometime in 2020 with Amy Adams taking on the lead role of an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime. The book includes elements of Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window as it follows a woman whose certainty that something isn't right with her neighbors battles against the illness that won't let her leave her own home.

This November, Blake Lively, Sterling K. Brown, and Jude Law will star in the film adaptation of Mark Burnell's The Rhythm Section. But this is one thriller that definitely deserves to be read before it gets the movie treatment thanks to its incredible characters. The book follows Stephanie, a woman who loses her entire family in a plane crash and then turns to drugs in order to cope. Soon she learns that the crash wasn't an accident and her desire for revenge leads her to join a covert operation to bring down the terrorists responsible for the deaths of her loved ones.

Edward Norton is directing and starring in the film adaptation of Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn which is set for an Oscar-friendly Nov. 1 release date. The novel the movie is based on adds a modern twist to the classic detective genre. Lionel Essrog suffers from Tourette syndrome, but he finds work with a mob boss who treats him like family. When his boss is killed, it's left up to Lionel to untangle the web of deception that led to the man's murder.

Agatha Christie's timeless novel Death on the Nile will soon hit the big screen (again) in a movie with a cast that includes Kenneth Branagh and Gal Gadot. The classic mystery finds famed detective Hercule Poirot trying to solve the murder of a young woman who is killed during a cruise down the Nile River.

In Susanna Jones's The Earthquake Bird, a woman named Lucy is living in Japan and working as a translator to escape her past. However, an affair and a new friendship soon turn her carefully crafted existence upside down. The movie version of the book doesn't have a firm release date just yet, but it will star Alicia Vikander, and premiere on Netflix, per Deadline.

Michael B. Jordan is set to star in the 2020 adaptation of Tom Clancy's Without Remorse. The book introduces readers to CIA operative John Clark, a man whose efficiency and remorseless approach to his work makes him a legend. But there's a dark story behind Clark's carefully crafted facade that informs his every action.

Netflix landed heavy hitters like Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, and Willem Dafoe for their upcoming film version of Joan Didion's The Last Thing He Wanted. Having such a strong cast on board can only mean good things for the adaptation of this dark and thrilling novel. The book follows one woman as she becomes embroiled in campaigns, conspiracies, and even arms deals in this searing exploration of the toll that corruption takes on one family's life.

Another Netflix acquisition, 2020's The Devil All the Time stars Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, and Robert Pattinson. Donald Ray Pollock's novel is a gritty look at America's heartland that revolves around a father who wants nothing more than for his wife's cancer to be cured. Meanwhile, his son is becoming involved with a crowd that will draw him and his family down a dark and dangerous path.
