True Detective "The Locked Room" Recap

We Need to Talk About the Final Minutes of True Detective

From its opening sequence, True Detective has been a good mystery series, but this week, it becomes a great one. Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) are edging closer to uncovering the truth about Dora Lange's ritualistic murder, and they get some good hints by following a trail to gonzo preacher Joel Theriot (Boardwalk Empire's Shea Whigham) — but forget about that for a second. Forget about that superawkward double date and the unprofessional interrogation. What makes this episode so good is the final minute or so. As Cohle waxes poetic about monsters, we finally meet one for ourselves.

He's tall, in his underwear, carrying a machete, and wearing a horrifying S&M mask with what I'm pretty sure is mace dangling off the front. (Or is it a simple gas mask?) The scene is transfixing. I was equally disgusted, terrified, and curious. Is it the drowned girl's boyfriend? Who is that mace for? Are things about to get a lot worse? What is going on?? Discuss.

Just catching up, but this show is getting really good. I think McConaughey is at the top of his game and the final moments of this episode had some Breaking Bad-esque qualities, which is the highest compliment. I can't wait to see what is to come in the next 5 episodes.

The last minute of this show was so well done!! Rusts little speech about death along with the background music builds up this scene and then when you see the man you believe to be their prime suspect emerging from his run down property carrying a machete in his tighty whiteys wearing a gas mask had me speechless!! "There's a monster at the end of it" is the last thing you hear him say, and he isnt joking, that guy was a real monster. A believable monster also, supposedly this guy has a history of running a meth & LSD lab. That definitely has the ability to produce one scary MFin monster!! Soooo pissed about having to wait an extra week for Episode 4 This cliffhanger is terrifying

Several thoughts: 1. Can we talk about Cohle's beer can arts & crafts at the table? That was also very unsettling. What was that about?! 2. I think the thing dangling from the gas mask was the bottom of the hose. It would have screwed on to the oxygen tank... if it was used properly. I was wondering if he had a person or drugs in that container. The appearance of the person was chilling... and I'm also anxious because the detectives allude to a gunfight or something out of Vietnam. 3. So far we have concentrated on three murders and three other women in 1995 -- the wife, the mistress, and the blind date girl. Does anyone else wonder if the dead woman from the 2012 murder is the wife, mistress, or blind date girl? It was creepy how the flashbacks had photos of the dead women, Cohle dancing with the blind date woman, and then more dead women photos. 4. I'm partially upset because the show is taking next weekend off... but I kind of need the break too!
