Donald Glover's "Atlanta" may be done, but his next project is almost here — and it looks just as compelling as it is terrifying. Entitled "Swarm," the series dives into the dangers of stan culture, the internet, and the psychological complications that can come with them. Prime Video teased the first trailer for the show on Feb. 10 with a creepy clip that promises blood, bugs, and tons of terror.
The streamer then followed up with a full preview of the series on Feb. 24, which shows Dominique Fishback as the drawn-back, Ni'Jah-obsessed Dre, part of the Beyoncé-inspired pop star's passionate fan base, the Killer Bees, who sting anyone who speaks against her. While it's unclear what events send Fishback's Dre on a bloody rampage in the trailer, it's clear her obsession with her favorite singer will send her spiraling down a dark path throughout the series.
In a Jan. 30 interview with Vanity Fair, Glover, who executive produces the project ("Watchmen"'s Janine Nabers is serving as showrunner), provided some insight into the many real-life inspirations behind his forthcoming series. "We just thought it'd be fun to make a post-truth 'Piano Teacher' mixed with 'The King of Comedy,'" he said, describing the show as a "sister" to "Atlanta."
"Swarm," which is part of Glover's multiyear deal with Amazon, is led by Fishback's (also a producer on the show) central character and a team of writers that includes Malia Obama. In a March 2022 interview with Variety, Glover described Obama as "somebody who's gonna have really good things coming soon" before adding that her "writing style is great."
Stephen Glover, Donald's brother and collaborator, echoed that sentiment, saying, "Donald always says perspective is important, and people with different perspectives are important for a writers' room. And for sure, [Malia] definitely has a unique perspective on everything. So we wanted to hear her stories and have her work with us. Listening to her stories and having her involved really gave us a lot of good ideas."
