Like every Harry Potter-obsessed fan, I've been anxiously waiting for the Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore trailer to drop. After playing it on repeat precisely 33 times since Dec. 13, I have so many questions, the main one being: why did Albus Dumbledore give Jacob Kowalski a wand?
As far as I remember (*checks countless wizard notes stored in my brain over the years*), Muggles and No-Majes aren't allowed to have wands or visit Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But Dumbledore does task Newt Scamander with giving Jacob a wand. You can see for yourself in the trailer below. The moment comes 56 seconds into the trailer, when Newt (Eddie Redmayne) tells Jacob (Dan Fogler), "Dumbledore asked that I give you something," as he pulls a wand out of his coat. So, um, what's up?
At the end of the trailer, at the 2:22 mark, Jacob is shown eating in the Great Hall with kids. They reach out to try to touch the wand, and Jacob shakes his head no, saying, "It's very dangerous; it's very powerful, if it got in the wrong hands, you know? It could mess you up." A student asks, "Why did you get it?" Jacob simply responds, "I got it for Christmas."
So why would Dumbledore want a Muggle to have a wand? We've found some of the best theories below.
