6 Game of Thrones Cliffhangers That Need to Be Resolved This Season

The sixth season finale of Game of Thrones managed to be a slow, tortuous burn while also packing in some of the most insane plot twists we've seen in the fantasy series thus far. The final episode has more deaths than we can possibly count, important confirmations of some of the biggest fan theories, and one disgusting, toe-filled meat pie. "Winds of Winter" is an intensely satisfying episode, but like all Game of Thrones finales, there are still quite a few plot lines that have been left open. Take a look at the season finale's biggest cliffhangers ahead, then get the scoop on season seven!

Where Is Arya Headed?
HBO

Where Is Arya Headed?

In a spectacularly gratifying sequence, Arya dons the face of a servant girl of House Frey and serves Walder Frey a meat pie stuffed with the body parts of his own sons ("they were hard to carve"). After taking off the face and revealing her identity, she happily slits Frey's throat. Where is Arya off to, exactly? Since Melisandre once told her, “We will meet again" when they briefly interacted in season three, it stands to reason that they might bump into each other during the Red Woman's journey South. Melisandre is on Arya's Kill List, so things could certainly get interesting.

Where Is Daenerys’s Army Going to Land?

Where Is Daenerys’s Army Going to Land?

In the finale's final minutes, we see a triumphant Dany at the helm of a large fleet of ships with Tyrion, Varys, and Missandei by her side and Yara and Theon backing her up. Is she headed straight for King's Landing, the sight of her father's fall from grace? Or maybe Dragonstone, the island not far from King's Landing where she was born, and also where her ancestor Aegon planned his original invasion of the kingdom? At least we know that with Tyrion acting as her Hand of the Queen, she'll have all the insider knowledge about King's Landing that she could possibly want.

What Will Happen With the Sandsnakes and Olenna Tyrell?
HBO

What Will Happen With the Sandsnakes and Olenna Tyrell?

Thanks to Varys's trip to Dorne, we know that he gets Ellaria Sand and Olenna Tyrell to pledge their loyalty (and armies) to Dany as an act of vengeance against the Lannisters. This means Ellaria and Olenna are openly supporting a foreign invader of King's Landing — basically an act of civil war — and will no doubt draw the ire of the new Queen of Westeros, Cersei Lannister. Will Cersei send an army of her own in reply?

04
How Is Cersei Going to Be Able to Lead King’s Landing?
HBO

How Is Cersei Going to Be Able to Lead King’s Landing?

In one of the most shocking moments of the finale, Cersei somewhat makes good on the Mad Queen theory by blowing up the Great Sept of Baelor (which housed the High Sparrow, the Faith Militant, Margaery Tyrell, and much of the nobles) with wildfire. Her son, King Tommen, witnesses the destruction from afar and decides to jump out his bedroom window in a fit of despair. By the end of the episode, Cersei is crowned queen and takes a seat on the Iron Throne, confirming what we all know to be true: SHE'S LOST HER DAMN MIND. We can hardly wait to see what more insane decisions she makes as queen.

05
Will Sansa and Littlefinger Betray Jon?
HBO

Will Sansa and Littlefinger Betray Jon?

After Littlefinger and the Knights of the Vale save the day in "The Battle of the Bastards" by helping Jon Snow defeat Ramsay Bolton's army at the last minute, it comes as no surprise that the former Master of Coin comes calling on Sansa for a favor in return. He tells Sansa that he wants to sit on the Iron Throne with her as his queen, but she shuts him down. Later they exchange a heated glance as the Northern lords crown Jon King in the North, and it's clear that Littlefinger's political ambitions might lead to some unfortunate situations for Jon and Sansa.

Where Are Gilly and Baby Sam Going to Live?
HBO

Where Are Gilly and Baby Sam Going to Live?

As far as nail-biting cliffhangers go, the fate of Gilly and Baby Sam is pretty low on the list, but still — that adorable, blonde, cherubic baby is too cute to ignore. Given the chilly welcome Sam, Gilly, and lil Sam received from a Maester upon arriving at The Citadel in Old Town, we know their future isn't going to be an easy one (especially since Sam stole his father's famed sword, Heartsbane), so you can bet we'll be worrying about it until Game of Thrones returns in April 2017.
