Davos is initially Stannis Baratheon's Hand of the King, a position which gets him into deadly situations like being present in the midst of a wildfire explosion at the Battle of the Blackwater. He's also not here for Stannis's ally, Melisandre, and her blood magic, causing Stannis to call for his execution at one point. Melisandre, however, notes that her god, R'hllor, has chosen Davos for a higher purpose, and thus he's still alive.
