8 Hulu Original Shows That Are Worth Watching

Everyone knows that Netflix makes incredibly binge-worthy shows. Amazon, too, produces solid content — Billy Bob Thornton even brought home a Golden Globe for original series Goliath. While first just a site to stream your favorite network shows, Hulu has thrown its hat into the ring and is creating some fantastic original content. Its lineup includes comedies, dramas, documentaries, mockumentaries, reality, and more. That's not to forget some of its future shows, such as The Handmaid's Tale and Marvel's Runaways, both of which are getting a lot of buzz. Difficult People
Amy Poehler serves as the executive producer on the comedy series Difficult People, which revolves around best friends Julie (Julie Klausner) and Billy (Billy Eichner). The two aspire to be famous comedians, but one thing always gets in the way: their personalities. Jaded and judgmental, they hate most celebrities and all strangers. The only people they seem to like are each other. Martin Short, Kate McKinnon, Amy Sedaris, Seth Meyers, Kathie Lee Gifford, Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Nathan Lane, and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just a few of the stars to be guests on the show. Gabourey Sidibe and Fred Armisen are also featured as recurring characters.

Casual
After learning of her husband's infidelity, Valerie (Michaela Watkins) divorces her husband and moves into her younger brother's home with her teenaged daughter, Laura (Tara Lynne Barr). Valerie works to navigate the unfamiliar waters of dating and single motherhood. Meanwhile, her brother, Alex (Tommy Dewey), who is the cofounder of a dating site, struggles to develop a meaningful relationship of his own. As for Laura, she gets into typical teenage trouble, but starting an inappropriate relationship takes things too far.

East Los High
Nominated for five Emmy awards, Hulu's longest running original series, East Los High, follows a group of Latino students in East Los Angeles. As they navigate the halls of high school, they are forced to confront difficult issues such as sex, drugs, teen pregnancy, and broken homes, just to name a few. Who knew the teenage years could be so treacherous?

Based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, this miniseries centers on Jake Epping (James Franco), a divorced English teacher who gets the opportunity to travel back in time to the early 1960s. When he arrives, he goes on a mission to thwart the 1963 assassination of John F. Kennedy. However, as he prolongs his stay, he becomes more unwilling to give up the life and relationships that he's built for himself, conflicting with his goals and inevitable return to the present.

The Path
His faith once unrelenting, Eddie Lane (Aaron Paul) returns home from a spiritual quest abroad doubting the fundamentals of Meyerism, a fictional religious group to which he and his family are members. This causes problems with his wife, Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), who was not only raised as a Meyerist, but is an influential member among the group. She confides in Cal Roberts (Hugh Dancy), the unofficial leader of the Meyerists, as their founder is mysteriously ill.
Each with their own agenda, they begin to clash with each other and the rest of the Meyerist community. However, when the FBI begins to monitor the Meyerists (who have dangerously begun to display cult tendencies), they discover that one wrong move can make the walls around them come crashing down.

Chance
Former House star Hugh Laurie plays another doctor in his new series, Chance. Based on Kem Nunn's 2014 book of the same name, the drama follows Dr. Eldon Chance (Laurie), a forensic neuropsychiatrist in San Fransisco. Growing weary of his other patients' problems, Chance invests his time in helping Jaclyn Blackstone (Gretchen Mol), a victim of domestic abuse. In helping her, Chance is exposed to the dark world of police corruption, blackmail and manipulation, mistaken identity, and worse.

Shut Eye
Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) portrays Charlie Haverford in the new drama Shut Eye. Charlie is a washed-up magician who now operates various cons across Los Angeles, including fortune telling booths and tarot card readings. After a bump on the head coincides with a hypnosis session, Charlie begins to have real clairvoyant abilities.
Freakish
While the show begins with a group of high school students in detention, Freakish is far from The Breakfast Club. The horror series follows a group of 10 students in Saturday detention at Keller High. When a nearby power plant explodes, other students (who were at school for band or sports practice) begin to exhibit strange symptoms . . . before transforming into zombie-like creatures. Now — trapped inside with limited food, supplies, and contact with the outside world — these teens must fight to survive a creature that they barely understand.
