Every Musician Who's Appeared in Game of Thrones Over the Years

When you finally peel your eyes away from the fire-breathing dragons and the hordes of frozen zombies, you might realize that some of the recognizable faces you've been seeing on Game of Thrones are usually somewhere other than your TV screen. HBO's hit fantasy drama has drawn plenty of talent from the music industry, whether it's in the form of recurring roles (Iwan Rheon as Ramsay Bolton, for instance) or blink-and-you'll-miss-them cameos. Keep reading to see a rundown of every other musically talented individual who's popped up on Game of Thrones so far (including Ed Sheeran!).

01
Ed Sheeran
HBO

Ed Sheeran

In the season seven premiere, you hear Ed Sheeran's voice before you actually see him. The singer makes a cameo as a Lannister soldier in a brief scene with Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), who stumbles upon him and his fellow soldiers in the woods.

02
Mastodon
HBO

Mastodon

American heavy metal band Mastodon gets a taste of the wildling life in the season five episode "Hardhome." They appear in a scene with the Night's King, dressed in the usual north-of-the-Wall furs and sporting heavy beards. Now, let's all imagine Wun Wun rocking out to "The Motherload" . . .

03
Thomas Brodie-Sangster
HBO

Thomas Brodie-Sangster

Yes, Thomas Brodie-Sangster is most recognizable for his role as the hopelessly in-love Sam in Love Actually and his work as Game of Thrones' Jojen Reed, but off screen he spends his time playing bass for the Winnet jazz band. It might not be as high profile as a role on TV's biggest show, but since Winnet is made up of his sister, Ava, and his parents, Tasha and Mark, we're sure he doesn't mind.

04
Sigur Rós
HBO

Sigur Rós

Like Mastodon, Sigur Rós's appearance is short and sweet. In season four's "The Lion and the Rose," the dreamy Icelandic band serves as entertainment during Joffrey and Margaery's wedding reception. The petulant king isn't exactly a fan of their version of "The Rains of Castemere," but fortunately he doesn't have to live with the memory of their performance for too long afterward.

05
Raleigh Ritchie
HBO

Raleigh Ritchie

Grey Worm quickly became a fan favorite on the show thanks to his role as Daenerys Targaryen's right-hand Unsullied warrior, but his real-life alter ego is much more vocal. Jacob Anderson — who goes by the stage name Raleigh Ritchie — dropped an album in 2016You're a Man Now, Boy — and it made such an impression that Kendrick Lamar took him on tour.

06
Coldplay's Will Champion
HBO

Coldplay's Will Champion

Will Champion typically spends his days banging the drums behind Chris Martin in Coldplay, but he took a break to perform for Lord Walder Frey at the Twins in season three's "The Rains of Castamere." Unfortunately the tune is a precursor to the infamous Red Wedding. At least Champion's appearance is in a memorable episode, right?

07
Carice Van Houten
HBO

Carice Van Houten

Not only can Carice Van Houten cast spells as Red Priestess Melisandre, but the Dutch actress can also hypnotize you with her voice. In 2012 she released a solo album, See You on the Ice (which kind of sounds like songs you'd hear in Grey's Anatomy), and also sings four songs on the soundtrack for her 2006 film Black Book.

08
Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody
HBO

Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody

Speaking of Grey's Anatomy, remember "Chasing Cars"? The Snow Patrol hit practically became synonymous with the medical drama for a while there, and that's not the band's only connection to a hit TV show. In season four, lead singer Gary Lightbody appears in "Walk of Punishment" as an unnamed bard leading a rousing rendition of "The Bear and the Maiden Fair" with a group of Roose Bolton's men (you can see him above, all the way on the left).

09
Michiel Huisman
HBO

Michiel Huisman

Sure, Michiel Huisman's butt might be all you can talk about, but there's way more to this Dutch star, we promise. Before stepping into the role of sellsword Daario Naharis, he fronted pop band Fontane. We might not be able to understand what he's saying in their songs, but it sounds lovely just the same.

10
Of Monsters and Men
HBO

Of Monsters and Men

Following in the footsteps of fellow Icelandic band Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men have a quick cameo in season six. The folk-pop group are a part of the traveling theater troupe Arya briefly joins, but if you don't remember them we won't hold it against you — this is the episode that reveals something pretty devastating about Hodor, which completely overshadows everything else.

11
Animal Circus's Joel Fry
HBO

Animal Circus's Joel Fry

Throughout seasons four and five, Joel Fry pops up as Hizdahr zo Loraq, a leader of one of Meereen's big, slave-owning families and eventually Dany's ill-fated betrothed. Hopefully the English actor's gig with his band, Animal Circus, fares better than his character.

12
Natalia Tena
HBO

Natalia Tena

Molotov Jukebox boasts quite the lead singer (and lead accordionist): Natalia Tena. You might know her better as House Stark-loyal wildling Osha or as Nymphadora Tonks in the Harry Potter franchise. She fused both of her careers when her Latin-pop-gypsy band's music video for "Neon Lights" featured actress Oona Chaplin, who plays Talisa Stark earlier on in the series.

13
Robson & Jerome's Jerome Flynn
HBO

Robson & Jerome's Jerome Flynn

The actor behind swarthy Bronn, Jerome Flynn, got a taste of pre-Game of Thrones fame in the mid '90s. The future actor started a pop group with Robson Green called Robson & Jerome, and they had a smash hit with their cover of The Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." Their song topped the UK charts in 1995, but sadly they were never able to re-create the same recipe for success (musically, that is).

14
Iwan Rheon
HBO

Iwan Rheon

The unsettling, steely creepiness that actor Iwan Rheon brings to the murderous Ramsay Bolton is enough to make him go down in history as one of TV's most prolific villains. It might come as a surprise, then, that Rheon's solo music career is full of easygoing folk-rock songs, which you can hear on his debut album, Dinard.

15
Dr. Feelgood’s Wilko Johnson
HBO

Dr. Feelgood’s Wilko Johnson

The musician behind the grim and mute Ser Ilyn Payne — the man we all know and despise for executing Ned Stark by beheading — just happens to also be the guitarist for pub-rock band, Dr. Feelgood, Wilko Johnson. Johnson was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 and stepped away from Game of Thrones after season two to focus on his health.

16

Chris Stapleton

Similar to the cameos of other musicians, country-music star Chris Stapleton, his bassist J.T. Cure, and his tour manager had brief appearance in the great Battle of Winterfell in season eight. The singer told Rolling Stone that the three had training for their roles as Wildings who die in battle and are subsequently turned into wights. "They knew we weren't actors so the direction was basically, 'We're going to place you, and when we tell you to, open your eyes," he explained.
