21 Movies to Watch If You Loved 13 Reasons Why

The fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why premieres on June 5, and we're curious to see how the story will come to a close. While we have to say goodbye to the students of Liberty High, there are plenty of other movies you can add to your list when you're done binge-watching. These 21 films all have some similarities to the hit Netflix series, whether they lie in tone, characters, or story. As you get ready for the final season, be sure to add the following films to your watching list next.

Thirteen

Thirteen

Director Catherine Hardwicke's debut film tells the story of volatile relationship between two best friends (Nikki Reed and Evan Rachel Wood) who are struggling to get through adolescence. It's grittier than 13 Reasons Why, but there are very similar themes throughout.

02
Brick

Brick

Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in this 2005 indie hit about a teenager who becomes an amateur detective when his ex goes missing. The way he uncovers events and pieces the puzzle together is very similar to how Clay eventually gets to the bottom of Hannah's death.

03
Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko

If you're already in a deep, dark hole of emotion, now is a great time to visit (or revisit) Donnie Darko. A young Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Donnie, a teenager who is so deep into his depression and psychosis that he doesn't even think it's that weird when a human-sized rabbit starts following him around.

04
According to Greta

According to Greta

This 2009 comedy about a death-obsessed girl (Hilary Duff) takes a much lighter approach to one of the darkest parts of 13 Reasons Why: teen suicide.

05
Paper Towns

Paper Towns

While some may have thought John Green's second adapted film didn't live up to The Fault in Our Stars, I can't help but think of the parallels between Paper Towns and 13 Reasons Why: the emotionally distant girl who's lost her way, the dopey kid who loves her from next door (practically), and the manicured suburban lawns.

06
Before I Fall
Everett Collection

Before I Fall

This book-to-movie adaptation just came out in March, and it goes hand in hand with 13 Reasons Why. One of the popular girls (Zoey Deutch) dies in a car accident, only to wake up again on the morning of the accident . . . over and over. She's searching for meaning in her life and ends up seeing a lot of things around her that she never noticed before, including her own unexpected impact on the people around her.

07
If I Stay
Everett Collection

If I Stay

Similar to Before I Fall, If I Stay features a somewhat supernatural storyline. Chloë Grace Moretz plays a girl who has an out-of-body experience, realizing that a horrible car accident has landed her in a coma, and her parents have already died. Now, she either has to fight to stay alive or let go and rest with her family.

08
It's Kind of a Funny Story
Everett Collection

It's Kind of a Funny Story

Based on Ned Vizzini's novel, It's Kind of a Funny Story takes you inside a psych ward when a suicidal teen (Keir Gilchrist) checks himself in. Though it has its dark moments, this movie might be cathartic for those feeling a bit hopeless after 13 Reasons Why.

09
Edge of Seventeen
Everett Collection

Edge of Seventeen

One of the reasons we love 13 Reasons Why is the honest portrayal of teen life; Edge of Seventeen also shows how kids really talk to each other and internalize their struggles.

10
The Basketball Diaries
Everett Collection

The Basketball Diaries

While The Basketball Diaries may not seem like an obvious choice here, Jim (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Hannah do have a lot in common. Both are vivacious young people with bright futures ahead of them, and both get brought down by external circumstances. Jim's downfall is just as ugly as Hannah's.

Want to go even further down the rabbit hole? Try this 1995 cult hit about a group of troubled teens living in New York City.

12
Edward Scissorhands

Edward Scissorhands

If there's one feeling that dominates every scene in 13 Reasons Why, it's loneliness. And no one is more alone than poor, misunderstood Edward Scissorhands (Johnny Depp).

13
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Everett Collection

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

If you think Fast Times at Ridgemont High is just a fun '80s movie, then you probably haven't seen it. Sure, everyone remembers Linda (Phoebe Cates) coming out of the pool topless, but what about Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) losing her virginity to the creepy older guy in the baseball dugout? It's a lot darker than you remember.

14
St. Elmo's Fire
Everett Collection

St. Elmo's Fire

Possibly the grimmest of the Brat Pack films, St. Elmo's Fire focuses on a group of young adults after they graduate and realize how hard the "real world" really is. Themes of adultery, drug addiction, and obsession all come into play in this 1985 drama.

15
Adventureland
Everett Collection

Adventureland

Though most of Adventureland's characters are older than the high-schoolers in 13 Reasons Why, they're are still trying to find their place in the world. Like Hannah, they all face rejection, heartbreak, and humiliation. (There's also an addictive retro soundtrack.)

16
Mystic Pizza
Everett Collection

Mystic Pizza

Julia Roberts, Lili Taylor, and Annabeth Gish are the stars of this 1988 drama, which follows three teenage waitresses as they find romance in their small seaside town. It's one of the few films that so accurately pinpoints the extreme emotional turmoil of being 18 and facing the rest of your life.

17
The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club

Did someone say "emotional turmoil"? John Hughes's 1985 drama is the deal follow up to 13 Reasons Why. It breaks down why we shouldn't classify people as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, or a criminal. If 13 Reasons Why taught us anything, it's that personalities go so much deeper than stereotypes.

18
Heathers
Everett Collection

Heathers

Meet the original Mean Girls in this dark comedy. Winona Ryder stars as Veronica, who drops out of her clique and meets a bad boy (Christian Slater) whose dislike of high school runs even deeper than her own.

19
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Everett Collection

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Like 13 Reasons Why, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is also based on a beloved YA book. Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ezra Miller bring the story to life as teens who band together to help each other get through the school year. It's every bit as touching as the Netflix drama.

20
The Virgin Suicides
Everett Collection

The Virgin Suicides

Once you've seen Sofia Coppola's 1999 drama, it's hard to forget it. Kirsten Dunst plays one of five sisters who are confined to their home by their religious parents. The story is told from the perspective of a group of neighbor boys who are obsessed with the girls, and as you can tell from the title, things go tragically awry.

21
Pump Up the Volume

Pump Up the Volume

Christian Slater again embodies rebellion in this 1990 drama as a student who runs a radio station from his parents' house. He plays DJ, encouraging his peers to act out their frustrations after the suicide of a fellow student.
