8 Things We Know For SURE About the 8th Season of American Horror Story

Buckle up American Horror Story fans, because it's officially time to spread out our clues and try to figure out where the most unpredictable show on television will take us next. With precious little time to go until the September premiere, buzz is at an all-time high. And luckily, finally, we have some very concrete pieces of information to cling to. An official title! A confirmation of theme! And so many interesting and intriguing cast members! In order to get the full grasp of what's to come, we're outlining everything that's come out about the season so far.

The Title

At this year's annual Comic-Con extravaganza in San Diego, FX announced the title of the season: Apocalypse. Don't worry, we've already got you covered with our latest theories: from lots of speculation about the Antichrist to a few hints from the AHS installation at Comic-Con!

02

The Reappearance of Michael Langdon

The aforementioned theory about the Antichrist certainly seems to hold more water now that Cody Fern has been cast to play the grown-up version of Michael Langdon. To refresh your memory, Michael is the unholy son of Tate and Vivien, the latter of whom died in childbirth. Season one ends with toddler Michael gleefully killing his nanny, which both surprises and pleases Constance, who continues to raise him. Now that he's an adult, will he bring about the titular apocalypse?

On June 14, Murphy finally confirmed that season eight will be the hotly anticipated Coven and Murder House crossover! While we don't know exactly what that will entail, we can count on the cast (and stories) from those seasons playing a huge part.

The Coven/Murder House AHS crossover season won't be happening next year...because it's happening THIS YEAR. AHS #8 WITCHES RULE THIS SEPTEMBER

The Cast

Sarah Paulson had already signed on way back in October 2017, making her the first member of the cast. But we'll do you one better. At this Winter's Television Critics Association panel, Murphy unleashed one major revelation. "Sarah Paulson is very excited about the dental appliances she will be wearing on the show," he teased. Good Lord, Mr. Murphy, what do you have bouncing around in your head this time around?

And then there's another AHS veteran who will return: Evan Peters. While there were concerns that Peters wouldn't return due to his involvement in Murphy's new show, Pose, his official casting, along with the return of his other American Horror Story: Cult costars Billy Eichner, Emma Roberts, Cheyenne Jackson, Adina Porter, and Leslie Grossman, was announced at an Emmy FYC panel in April. The gang's all here!

There are even more additions as of June 2018: Murphy has also confirmed that Joan Collins, Billie Lourd, and Kathy Bates are in the mix for season eight as well.

On Aug. 23, The Wrap reported that Murder House alums Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott were returning for the eighth season as well. Eagle eyed fans spotted the two filming on set in Los Angeles.

The Setting

Outside of his Coven/Murder House crossover confirmation, Murphy also recently spilled a pretty shocking secret about season eight: it takes place in the future! I guess that's the only way to make an apocalypse work, right?

Truth be told, we're not sure if this was a veil to hide his plans for the crossover or if the crossover, indeed, will take place in this time period. Here's what Murphy teased before his recent theme revelation: "All I'll say about it is I want to go to the future — still topical, but the future, which I've never done," he said.

Before you start envisioning a lot of chrome of a dystopian Hunger Games situation, we're not going too far forward. Murphy elaborated just a bit at the TCA panel: "It's set in the near future. It has nothing to do with anything you've ever seen before. It's really chilling."

Finally, in April, Murphy really nailed down the time period: we're jumping 18 months forward, exactly, from April 2018. Hmmm, I wonder what sort of significance October 2019 holds. Witches and October do mix well together, though.

The Mysterious Twist

In June, Murphy warned Entertainment Weekly that we should be on guard for a major twist. "It's a season unlike anything we've done because there's a big hook to it. There's a huge thing that happens in episode five." What could it be?!

The Cameos

Murphy also told EW another exciting revelation: we're going to see a bunch of AHS's most beloved stars in season eight. "You will see so many fan favorites return that you'll feel like it's The Love Boat," he said. In the same breath, he also claimed that the season is "a very high concept," whatever that means.

Listen, if we could get appearances from Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, and Lily Rabe, that would just be the best. And, I mean, with the crossover in play, these cameos are not out of the question. Make it happen, Murphy.
