"Some Kind of Wonderful" actually has a surprising take on the high school popularity trope, especially if you're more used to movies like "Mean Girls." The basic plot is definitely familiar: Watts, an uncool, tomboy girl, falls for her best guy friend Keith, but he only has eyes for Amanda, the rich, popular girl.
