John Corbett Is in the "Hot Dad" Phase of His Career, and We're Into It

Corbett first became a household name in CBS's fish-out-of-water, small-town series Northern Exposure. Airing from 1990 to 1995, the heartthrob actor played Chris Stevens, a philosophical radio host and ex-con. In the small Alaskan town, pretty much everyone was either in love with Chris or they wanted to be him. The music-obsessed character set the tone for many of Corbett's future roles.

It's safe to say that Corbett is responsible for the best laugh-out-loud moments in the John Cusack/Kate Beckinsale romantic comedy Serendipity. The movie allowed Corbett to embrace his silly side as a new age musician who is way too mesmerized by his own skills to pay attention to the woman that he supposedly loves.

If you didn't fall in love with Corbett via Chris Stevens, then you definitely fell for him in My Big Fat Greek Wedding. As Ian Miller, the actor is at once charming, romantic, and adorably normal. He's the romantic hero that rom-coms need, but so rarely have. He returned to the role for the long-awaited sequel in 2016.

If anyone besides Mr. Big ever had a real chance at winning Carrie's heart, it was Aidan. He was a refreshingly normal, kind guy, who also happened to look like he had just stepped out of a J.Crew catalog. Thanks to Corbett, a character that could have been bland in a lesser actor's hands felt like a total catch. He went on to play Aidan again in Sex and the City 2.

Corbett showed off his ability to play a darker role in 2007's The Messengers. The horror film, which also starred Kristen Stewart, has a twisty plot which hinges on Corbett's character and his potentially nefarious motivations.

Max Gregson is the ever-patient husband of Toni Collette's Tara in this Showtime dramedy. While it's hard to compete with Collette's go-for-broke performance as a woman dealing with dissociative identity disorder, Corbett was a grounding presence on the sometimes over-the-top series.

If you want to make an argument that all of Netflix's teen rom-coms are related, then you can start here. In 2010, Corbett played the dad in Ramona and Beezus, an adorable movie that starred Selena Gomez, and — wait for it — The Kissing Booth's Joey King.

Perhaps one of Corbett's most underrated roles is his nuanced portrayal of Seth in Parenthood. Seth is the alcoholic and absentee father to Sarah Braverman's two teens, but for most of the show, he's trying to get his act together. Corbett's portrayal of a man dealing with addiction, while also trying to reconnect with his kids is powerful, moving stuff.

In The Boy Next Door, Jennifer Lopez's character becomes involved with her teenage son's new friend. Corbett plays her husband, who she catches cheating on her with his secretary, proving that even the man who gave the world Aidan can play a cad now and then.

In this FX comedy, Corbett came full circle as an aging rock star, who just couldn't leave his wild lifestyle behind. Think a less sensitive Chris, who was older, but definitely not wiser.
