Milo Ventimiglia Shares the 3 This Is Us Scenes That Make Him Cry, and Great, Now I'm Crying

This Is Us is one of the most emotional shows to watch on TV at the moment, so I can only imagine what it's like to film it. Milo Ventimiglia sat down with Today to discuss the scenes that have been the most intense to shoot and the ones that make him cry — and yes, there are plenty. In honor of season three's premiere on Sept. 25, let's reminisce about some of the most tear-jerking moments, shall we?
In the video interview above, Ventimiglia shared that the unforgettable fire scene in the "Super Bowl Sunday" episode was the most intense to shoot because — fun fact — the cast and crew dealt with real fire. "It was controlled, it was safe, but instinctively I was putting myself in between crew members and kids and staring down a real fire," Ventimiglia explained.
As for three of the scenes that make him cry? When Randall says goodbye to Deja, when Kate has a miscarriage, and when Kevin hits rock bottom. When Randall Has to Say Goodbye to Deja
In episode "Number Three," the finale of season two, Randall has to grapple with the fact that Deja's mom, Shauna, got out of jail earlier than he thought she would. He loves Deja and has made a special place for her in his heart, but he also respects her desire to want to be reunited with her mom.

During the tearful goodbye scene in the Pearsons' driveway, Deja tells Randall, "You know I don't want you to think that just because I want to go home doesn't mean that I don't like living with you." Randall reminds her to work hard and that she, too, can have a "big house, fancy car."

Kate's Miscarriage
The second scene that makes Ventimiglia cry is when Kate experiences the crushing blow of a miscarriage. At the beginning of "Number Two," Kate is the happiest she's ever been. She's excited to be pregnant, and she and Toby are preparing for their first baby by ordering a number of new things for their home.

After Kate takes a painful fall in the bathroom and soon learns she miscarried, she and Toby are left to confront their grief and figure out if they want to try again.

Kevin's Heartbreaking Struggle
One of the most powerful episodes of the whole series is "Number One," which puts a spotlight on Kevin. He's invited to attend an alumni honor ceremony at his high school, where he was once a star football player, but in the present day, he feels like he's anything but honorable. He is mentally and physically spiraling out of control and continues to down pills and drink excessively. Kevin always hides behind a confident, in-control facade, but the truth is sometimes he's broken, too.

"The heartbreak that happens in [Kevin's] episode called 'Number One' . . . that whole journey, and seeing how broken Kevin is, even though everybody still applauds him. That really just cuts me up," Ventimiglia said. "Basically anything that has to do with the kids."
