SpongeBob Fans Are Furious Over Super Bowl Tribute, and I Can See Why

When I tuned in to watch the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday, I expected performances by Maroon 5, Travis Scott, and Big Boi. But what I didn't expect was a special appearance by Bikini Bottom's very own SpongeBob SquarePants! Apparently, I must have been living under a rock, because, as my boyfriend informed me, a petition (which was signed by over 1.2 million fans) was started to have "Sweet Victory" performed at the show following creator Stephen Hillenburg's death back in November. Well, I guess it sort of happened. I mean, kinda.

During the halftime show, only a few seconds from the "Sweet Victory" clip made it on air before Scott's "Sicko Mode" performance, and fans were livid, to say the least. The SpongeBob SquarePants episode centers around SpongeBob and his friends forming a marching band as they prepare for their "Sweet Victory" performance at the Bubble Bowl. How could they do that to SpongeBob?! Even though the official SpongeBob account said they were "honored and humbled" to just be included, fans (my boyfriend included) felt used. Ahead, see the most hilarious reactions to the anticlimactic Super Bowl moment.
