7 Real-Life California Locations Where Big Little Lies Is Filmed

Some of us watch the hit HBO show Big Little Lies for the drama, and some watch for the gorgeous scenery. The Monterey, CA-set series is as famous for its picturesque settings as it is for its twisty plots and complicated characters. Since it's set in the beachfront communities of California, it's not surprising that the locations are stunning. Although the show is set in Monterey, not all the filming happened there; some of the major locations in the show can actually be found in other spots. From the beaches themselves to an actual house used in the show, we've found out where some of the most memorable locations can be found (Reese Witherspoon sightings not included).

01

Old Fisherman's Wharf

In the series, the ladies hang out at Blue Blues Cafe on Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf. Although there is no such cafe in real life, the wharf is real and is home to beautiful oceanfront views, plenty of people- (and boat-) watching, and several restaurants, from the seafood restaurant Fisherman's Grotto to Italian restaurant Paluca Trattoria.

02

Monterey Bay Aquarium

In season two, Jane actually begins working at the aquarium, which is a top tourist draw in Monterey. The aquarium recently opened a new center dedicated to free education programs, packed with programming for students and teachers in the area.

03

Bixby Creek Bridge

One of the most iconic establishing shots in the series is this bridge on Highway 1. It's a popular spot for filmmakers to use to evoke the SoCal setting and is often seen in the series as the ladies drive about their lives.

04

Garrapata Beach

The beautiful beach has served as the backdrop for several scenes in the series. When Madeline, Jane, and Celeste head out for a run, they're on this particular stretch of beach. It's also where the "beach day" scene with the women and their kids was filmed.

05

Carmel Highlands

Celeste lives in this expensive, beautiful neighborhood that's a tranquil oasis away from the buzz of city living. The exteriors of her massive home were shot on location in this neighborhood that's famously been home to stars like Clint Eastwood.

06

Point Pinos Lighthouse

The lighthouse and the boulevard leading up to it show up in several scenes throughout the series. It's a popular spot for its gorgeous views.

07

Broad Beach

If you're a big enough Big Little Lies fan to want to stay at one of the real locations, this is for you! Madeline's sprawling beach house is actually available as a vacation rental — but it's not in Monterey. It's in Broad Beach, a SoCal community with stunning beach views and large homes that have hosted more than one film crew over the years.
