When Apple TV+ launched in November, the streaming service seemed certain that prestige dramas like The Morning Show and See would be its biggest draw. But to date, the streamer's best show is a 19th century set comedy about the life and times of a young Emily Dickinson. Hailee Steinfeld stars as Emily, a teen who uses modern slang and routinely visits with Death (played by Wiz Khalifa). And the actor wastes no time in bringing a poet known for isolating herself roaring to vibrant life.
Watching Emily fight for the freedom to write and to be published, to love Sue — her childhood best friend who is marrying her brother, and to simply be is breathtaking. Dickinson is one of those rare comedies that can be sidesplittingly funny one moment (think John Mulaney's guest appearance as David Thoreau) and tragic the next (the entirety of "We Lose - Because We Win"). It's a strange and beautiful show that's more than worth subscribing to yet another streaming service for.
