17 International Teen TV Shows on Netflix That Bring All the Drama

Think high school TV shows are just for people still in high school? Think again. Series revolving around teens make for totally compelling watches no matter your age, and there are more addicting coming-of-age shows out there than you may even realize. Netflix has tons of international teen TV shows available to stream, and they're just as drama-filled (if not more so) than your fave teen dramas from the United States. If you can't get enough of love triangles, school uniforms, and unsupervised house parties, then we have some YA series from around the world that you should add to your Netflix queue.

Elite

In this drama from Spain, three working-class teens displaced by an earthquake are enrolled in the most exclusive school in the country, and the clash between the classes erupts into a battle that eventually turns fatal. Prepare to feel major Gossip Girl vibes (but with even more drama involved, if that's possible). There are currently three seasons available to stream, and there's a fourth season on the way.

How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)

Inspired by real events, this German series tells the story of how a 17-year-old high school student created Europe's largest online drug business from his bedroom with his best friend, Lenny — and all to impress his American pill-popping party-animal ex-girlfriend, Lisa. This coming-of-age story will likely remind you of Sex Education (if the series replaced sex advice with pills, that is). You can stream the first two seasons of this series, though you'll have to wait until fall 2021 for season three.

Loosely based on the real-life scandal of two high school students from Rome's wealthy Parioli district engaging in part-time prostitution, this series follows a group of Roman teens seeking a sense of identity and financial independence by selling sex. Spoiler alert: the pressure of leading double lives inevitably catches up to them. You can watch all three seasons of the series now (though, unfortunately, there won't be a fourth).

Derry Girls
Netflix

Derry Girls

Set during the Troubles in early-1990s Northern Ireland, this comedy series follows 16-year-old Erin and her friends as they navigate their adolescence amid the country's political unrest. Though you'd think the setting might make the show a bit morose, the talented young cast and the funny trials they face in their Catholic girls' secondary school make the show surprisingly lighthearted. It might be a while before we see season three, but you can watch the first two seasons now.

Blood & Water

Blood & Water

Netflix's second original series from South Africa revolves around Puleng, a crafty 16-year-old on a mission to find her older sister, who was abducted at birth 17 years before. This series may contain the same tropes as other teen-centric series, but the fact that human trafficking (which is a huge issue in South Africa) is at the center of this drama gives it a depth that other teen shows lack. Good news: it's officially coming back for a second season.

Inspired by Norse mythology, this Norwegian coming-of-age series takes place in the fictitious town of Edda following bizarre weather patterns caused by global warming. As the town faces the threat of pollution and melting glaciers, it becomes clear that only a teenager gifted with the embodiment of Thor can save the people of Edda. The best part: it's returning for a second installment.
