A sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, the film takes place nine years after the failure of the Discovery One mission. Now, Dr. Heywood Floyd (who was present on the original mission) and crew members are returning to space on the Discovery Two in an attempt to reactivate the HAL system and reveal the secrets of what happened on the original spacecraft. Simultaneously, however, the Soviets are preparing their own space mission to Discovery One, and the two forces are racing to be the first to reach it.
