Sleeper spaceship Avalon is journeying to a distant colony planet transporting over 5,000 passengers. On the spaceship, the passengers are in a temporary state of hibernation, only set to awaken once they arrive at the planet, which is 120 lightyears away. When a collision with an asteroid causes damage to the spaceship and awakens passenger James Preston (Chris Pratt), he awakens Aurora Lane (Jennifer Lawrence), a fellow passenger, to keep him company. The two gradually fall in love and must face the reality of aging on the ship before reaching the colony.
