Engaged lovers Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) and Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) are soon to be married but are conflicted between marrying on an island resort or at Sadie's family church, St. Augustine's. The pair settle on the church and are urged by Reverend Frank Littleton (Robin Williams) to undergo a series of tests to determine their commitment to one another.
