All the Kings and Queens of Westeros
All the Kings and Queens of Westeros That Came Before and After Aegon II
1
Also known as Aegon the Conqueror, Aegon I was the first Targaryen king and the first to unite the kingdoms of Westeros under a single ruler. Aegon invaded Westeros and won his war of conquest, with the surviving great Houses bending the knee to his rule.
Aegon notably married both of his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, meaning he ruled with two queens for a time before the death of his younger sister-wife, Rhaenys. (In "House of the Dragon" season one, episode seven, Aegon I's polygamous marriage inspires Rhaenyra to marry Daemon while still married to Laenor. "Let us bind our blood, just as Aegon the Conqueror did with his sisters," she says. "With you as my husband and my prince consort, my claim would not be so easily challenged." Since Laenor and Daemon are brothers by marriage and Laenor lives on in secret, Rhaenyra technically has brother-husbands.)
Aegon I's reign marked the beginning of centuries of Targaryen rule, although not everyone was pleased with the new government, and the reigns of his successors had to deal with the aftermath.
Aegon I died of a stroke at age 64 and was succeeded by his son with Rhaenys, Aenys I.
