Esquire journalist Lloyd Vogel is assigned by his editor to write an article about heroes, with Fred Rogers (Hanks) as the focus of the story. Lloyd is skeptical about Rogers and convinced that his gentle, kind persona is an act. As he interviews him, however, he connects with Rogers and changes his perspective not only on the piece and its subject but also on his relationships and life as a whole.
