Don P. Hooper's blistering YA debut "True True" follows a Black New York City teen facing racial discrimination from students and administration at his new private prep school. Seventeen-year-old Gil has grown up his entire life in Brooklyn, splitting his time fighting at his local dojo, caring for his ailing grandmother, and thinking about ways to help his father return to the US after a deportation scare. His senior year, he makes the leap over to Augustin, a private school in Manhattan, to gain access to better resources and bolster his résumé. However, a triggering incident on his first day shows Gil that life at Augustin doesn't cater to students like him. As he fights to get Black students at Augustin the justice they deserve, he risks losing his friends and relationships in Brooklyn as life at Augustin consumes him.
