The classic story of "Jane Eyre" gets an update with "Wild, Beautiful, and Free," Sophfronia Scott's Civil War-era novel. Jeannette is a biracial woman, the daughter of an enslaved woman and a plantation owner. When her father dies, his will divides his estate between Jeannette and her white half-sister, but his vicious widow refuses to honor her inheritance and immediately sells her into slavery.
