A new Tom and Jerry movie premiering in 2021 was not on my bingo card, but hey, anything's possible, right? In the trailer, which was released on Nov. 17, Tom & Jerry finds Jerry moving to a fancy New York City hotel ahead of an important wedding, causing the event's planner to hire Tom to get rid of him. Of course, classic Tom and Jerry shenanigans ensue as if there's one thing that always seems to elude Tom, it's Jerry.
It's hard to figure out just who this movie is for, as it was originally intended to be released in 2009 before it got caught up in development hell and certainly feels like a product of that era. The interactions in Tom & Jerry feel less like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and more like Looney Tunes: Back in Action; they don't quite work, and the live actors feel like they're just interacting with green balls on sticks. Could I be wrong and the movie could be one of the best featuring the cat and mouse pair? Yes, and I certainly hope so with a cast that includes Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost, and Ken Jeong. Only time will tell when the movie premieres in theaters — you read that right — March 5, 2021.
