Parents Petition to Remove Principal Who Banned Thanksgiving, Santa, and the Pledge of Allegiance

Although we've become more open-minded as a society, it's almost impossible to not offend somebody these days. To avoid the risk of cultural and religious insensitivity all together, a new Brooklyn, NY, school principal, Eujin Jaelin Kim, decided to ban Thanksgiving, Santa Claus, and the Pledge of Allegiance from her campus. In response, almost 200 people have signed a petition to remove Eujin in just a matter of hours since it was created.

According to PTA President Mimi Ferrer, Thanksgiving had to be celebrated as a "harvest festival" despite surrounding schools still continuing all holiday festivities. "I think it's best to learn from one another," she told PIX11 news. "Just because we don't celebrate it, or a handful of people don't celebrate it, does not mean that the whole school should not be learning from it."

Another parent, Maria Salvador, even moved her son to a different school last year after an unsuccessful discussion with Eujin about Santa. Students are also unhappy with the absence of hallway decorations and holiday cheer.

In an era when a Starbucks red cup can stir up religious controversy, is entirely removing long-held traditions the best solution? Or is it harmless to allow children, regardless of cultural background, to be exposed to various customs?
