These 8 Heartbreaking Day Care Blunders Are Going to Make You Want to Be a SAHM in 2016

This year brought a lot of fun and funny to the world of parenting — particularly through endless dance videos and hysterical homework fails — but there were also plenty of scary incidents that made every mom question her childcare choices.

Day care centers had a bit of a rough year due to a few blunders here and there — all upsetting, some truly tragic — read through to see the stories that will make you wish you could be a stay-at-home-mom in 2016.

Baby Boy Tragically Dies in the Care of an Unlicensed Childcare Center

Karl Towndrow was just 3 months old when he was dropped off for his first day at SoHo Child Care — an unlicensed day care center in Brooklyn, NY — by his mother, who said she'd return in the middle of the day to nurse. Unfortunately, she never saw her child alive again, as Karl became unresponsive after being put down for a nap, and was pronounced dead at the hospital despite the day care worker's best efforts to perform CPR.

Day Care Worker Fired Before First Day

Kaitlyn Walls, a single mom, was meant to start her first day working at a day care center, but was fired before going in for her first shift. In a post to Facebook that led to her termination, Walls said, "I start my new job today, but I absolutely hate working at day care." She then followed up with, "Lol, it's all good, I just really hate being around a lot of kids." A local group found the posts, and word spread far enough to reach her new employer, who told her not to go in for her first day.

Boy Forcibly Swaddled For Naps

Jason and Rebecca Vannest had been sending their son William to Rainbow Child Care Center in Davison, MI, for over a year when a worker at the facility reached out to the family with a shocking photo. In the picture, 2-year-old William is swaddled in a blanket — something that the worker informed the Vannests was going on for a couple of months — in order to restrain him for a nap. The parents filed a report against the day care and said of the situation, "It's just scary as a parent because I don't know how another parent would find this out."

Mother Forced to Break Into Day Care Center

Back in August, Sharonda Ross was forced to break into her child's day care center after hours, once she and her husband realized that they'd both thought the other was going to pick up their son, 10-month-old Jordan, at the center. When they arrived, they could hear Jordan crying, but the parking lot was empty, so her husband broke the glass to get in and retrieve Jordan. The owner of the day care, Joann Davis, said at the time that she was "as sorry as she can be," but did not fire the employee that locked up for the night with baby Jordan still inside.

Charged With Running a Toddler Fight Club

A day care center faced criminal charges after footage was found of the children being encouraged to engage in one-on-one battles, like a toddler "Fight Club." In a Snapchat video, an employee at the day care, 22-year-old Erica Kenny, was heard referencing the popular movie to encourage the fighting. Kenny was fired and faced fourth-degree child abuse and third-degree endangering the welfare of a child charges, and officials began an investigation to see if the fights took place on more than one occasion.

Day Care Worker Assaulted

Martha McClure, owner of Martha's Mini Day Care in Ronan, MT, was assaulted in October for protecting three children from their father, Francis Jackson. The children were removed from Jackson's care and legally, he was prohibited from seeing them. When he attempted to pick them up with an unidentified woman one afternoon, McClure said she could smell alcohol and that he appeared intoxicated. McClure was attacked by Jackson and the woman and faces a long road to recovery.

Boys Left Outside For Hours Without Sunscreen

Two Oklahoma boys suffered severe second- and third-degree burns after spending hours outside at a local water park — which they attended with their day care — without any protection from the sun. Graphic photos of the boys' burns were posted to Facebook by their aunt, who said that the 5- and 7-year-old boys were in a lot of pain. The post caught the attention of news outlets but also sparked a conversation about childcare legislation, as many people commented that day cares are sometimes prohibited from putting sunscreen on a child unless their parent has brought it in for them, and even then, the child is required to apply it himself.

Children Drugged With Benadryl

A former employee of a day care in Oklahoma contacted the Department of Human Services to inform them that the center was giving the children Benedryl to induce naps. Leslee Meade — whose 6-month-old son, Hendrix, was one of the seven victims — reported that her son would come home from day care unable to keep his eyes open. More and more employees came forward after to say that owner, Beverly Sue Stair, was ordering them to administer the drug, and the county sheriff recommended that charges be filed against Stair.
